Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - Ottawa Fury FC were edged 1-0 by Rayo OKC in their fall season home opener Sunday afternoon at TD Place. Despite producing 15 shots and controlling nearly 60% of possession, Fury FC were unable to recover from an unfortunate own goal early in the first half.
"We've got to create more chances. If we have that amount of possession, you have that many balls in the box, you've got to score goals. If you don't score goals, you can't win games...there lies the problem." said Dalglish. "We have got to be better in the final third."
The visitors struck in the 8th minute when Rayo's Michel drove in a goal line corner kick that deflected off a surprised Marcel DeBellis and into the net. The early goal sparked an offensive pushback by Ottawa that saw them create six scoring opportunities but the home team was unable to convert. Fury FC held 58% of the possession in the first half while completing 81.5% of their passes.
Ottawa continued their offensive push in the second half, bringing on newly acquired American striker Giueseppe Gentile in the 66th minute. Despite the added fire power, Fury FC were unable to equalize, coming closest in the 69th minute when Kyle Porter collected a loose cross on the left side of the 18-yard box, cut right and fired a low strike, forcing Daniel Fernandes to make a diving stop.
Scoreline aside, Fury FC put in another strong team performance in front of over 6300 fans that saw them complete 531 passes - 163 more than their opposition. In 90 minutes of play, Ottawa did not concede a single shot on goal.
Fury FC heaed on the road for the next two matches - July 17 in Edmonton and July 23 in Jacksonville - before returning to TD Place on July 27 against the Carolina RailHawks.
