Fury FC Downs Indy Eleven in 1-0 Thriller
October 2, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA - Ottawa Fury FC all but guaranteed itself a post-season berth thanks to a 1-0 win over Indy Eleven on a chilly October Wednesday night at TD Place.
Once again, it was captain Carl Haworth notching the winner in his favorite way: a free kick in the first half that would stand-up through a physical, often heated affair in the Nation's Capital. Fury FC went on to have more scoring chances during the opening 45 minutes, accumulating 4 shots on target.
Fury FC came back on the pitch for the second half with a lot of energy and managed to keep their focus versus a very physical Indy Eleven side. Irving and his back four were solid through all 90 minutes and got their 9th clean sheets of the season.
STORYLINES
Carl Haworth's early goal in the 16' minute was his 9th USL goal this season and his 5th free kick goal this season.
Youngster, Antoine Coupland, got in the game at the 78th minute replacing Haworth. He made an instant impact with his aggressive style of play on the wing and was able to put pressure on Indy's defenders.
Fury FC guaranteed itself a playoff spot with tonight's win. Ottawa will hit the road next Tuesday, October 8, to play Swope Park Rangers.
Ottawa also ended the game with more shots directed to the net, with a total of 15 against 10.
POST-GAME COMMENTS
Head Coach Nikola Popovic
"Today again we continued what we've been doing, a fantastic performance. We all have to be very proud of how we performed today ... we gave almost nothing to Indy. I think today both in the first and second half the team was very strong, we were able to correct small mistakes and I've very proud of the way these players played today, how they fought for the club, the city and for Canada."
Carl Haworth, Fury FC captain
"It's massive for the group of guys here and it's a testament to this squad and the belief we have in this system. It just shows that everybody's ready to step in and do the job for the team and that's what's most important. That's what it's all about, peaking at the right time and going into the playoffs. We've just shown that we can come together at the right time."
