Fort Wayne Freedom News Release
The Fort Wayne Freedom announces the addition of defensive back Ernie Smith to the 2004 preseason roster. Smith is the third player to be signed from the team's open workout in December.
The 5-10, 185 pound Smith brings additional speed to the Freedom secondary, where he will challenge for a starting role in 2004. Last fall, the Detroit native racked up 17 interceptions in just 12 games at the semi-pro level. Smith also saw action at wide receiver, making 20 catches, and returned kicks.
"Ernie has had to take a longer path than some guys do in their careers," commented head coach Rich Huff. "We've watched him over the course of a year and feel he should be able to do well in the NIFL."
The Freedom kicks off the 2004 season Sunday, March 14th at home against the showme Believers. Season tickets are on sale now through January and start at just $50 for a seven game home schedule. Tickets may be purchased at the Freedom office or by phone at 260-422-2293.
