Freedom improve to 9-0, Fricker's players of the week announced

FORT WAYNE – The Fort Wayne Freedom continued their winning ways Saturday routing Tupelo 45-20 at Memorial Coliseum. With the victory, the team improves to 9-0 in United Indoor Football play.

The Freedom never trailed jumping out to a 31-9 halftime lead to cruise to victory and maintain a two game lead over their closest rival in the race for home field advantage in the UIF playoffs.

In that game, every Freedom starting receiver grabbed a touchdown pass in the victory. The Freedom defense continues to impress forcing three interceptions and sacked Tupelo quarterbacks four times. In the process, the stingy Freedom held the FireAnts to 189 yards of offense, including just two touchdowns.

Quarterback Bryan White completed 15-of-23 passes for 161 yards and four touchdown passes to edge running back Rocky Harvey for offensive player of the week honors. Harvey rushed for 16 times for 70 yards with two rushing touchdowns. This former Illinois star also caught two passes for 14 yards, including one touchdown.

Fricker's defensive player of the week, Lewis Carter, registered six solo tackles, assisted in eight others and grabbed one interception. Alan Ganaway made a strong case with six solo tackles and an interception return for 21 yards.

The special team's player of the week was Scott Russell. Russell registered one of the rarest plays in indoor football, a rouge kick. On what would be Tupelo's first kick off return in the game. Frustrated by Josh Telenko's long ball, Adrian Cockfield was handcuffed in the end zone. Russell finished the play with one of his trademark hits stopping kick returner in his own end zone The play awarded the Freedom one point. (Incidentally, it's only happened two other times in team history, against Tupelo April 23 this season and Mar 27, 2004, against Lexington.)

Every week, the Freedom staff selects it Fricker's Player of the Week and honors those players as part of the weekly coaches show "In the Huddle with Matt Land" every Monday night from 6pm to 7pm at the restaurant.
