Vancouver Whitecaps News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC, in conjunction with the Canadian Soccer Association, announced today that striker Jodi-Ann Robinson, defenders/midfielders Carmelina Moscato and Chelsea Stewart, as well as defender Shannon Woeller have all been called up to Canada's women's national team.
The quartet were called into head coach Carolina Morace's 24-player squad for Canada's two-match international friendly series versus the United States at Marina Auto Stadium in Rochester, New York, on Sunday, July 19, and Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina, on Wednesday, July 22.
Moscato, Robinson, and Stewart each earned call-ups for Canada's most recent friendly against the Americans, with the USA running out 4-0 winners at Toronto's BMO Field on May 25. For Woeller, this is the defender's second call-up to the senior national team.
Robinson, 20, has had a major impact with the Whitecaps women this season, leading the team in scoring with seven goals and one assist in 10 United Soccer Leagues W-League appearances. The 5-foot-4 striker was a member of Vancouver's 2006 W-League championship-winning team and currently sits tenth on the Whitecaps all-time career leaders list with 30 points in 38 appearances.
Born in Saint Anne's Bay, Jamaica, but raised in Richmond, BC, Robinson made her international debut on April 21, 2005, against Germany at the age of 16. She has since made 34 senior appearances, scoring six goals during that time. In September 2007, Robinson represented Canada at the FIFA Women's World Cup in China, while last summer, the striker was a member of Canadian team that took part in the Beijing Olympics.
Moscato, 25, has played 530 minutes in six matches after joining the Whitecaps from W-League side FC Indiana this season. The 5-foot-9 defender/midfielder was also a part of the 2004 W-League championship-winning Whitecaps side and is tied for 16th amongst Vancouver's all-time career leaders with 15 points in 20 career matches for Vancouver.
The Mississauga, Ontario, native earned her first international U-20 cap at just 16 years of age. On February 6, 2001, Moscato debuted in a 3-2 defeat to Finland at the Adidas Cup in Houston, Texas. Moscato has gone on to represent Canada during the country's hosting of the 2002 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup and on April 3, 2002, Moscato claimed her first cap with Canada's senior national team, as she played 19 minutes in a 0-0 draw versus Australia. In total, she has made 23 appearances and scored two goals as a senior international. Moscato has played in major tournaments such as the 2002 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup in the USA, and the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in 2004.
Stewart, 19, has started all nine matches she has played this season with the Whitecaps. Since joining the club in 2008, the defender/midfielder has featured in 15 matches for a total of 1,248 minutes of action.
Born in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and raised in Faribault, Minnesota, Stewart played her youth soccer in the United States before joining Canada's U-20 national team upon gaining her Canadian citizenship in 2008. The 5-foot-5 youngster made her U-20 international debut on May 3, 2008, in a 3-0 victory over Mexico in Lafayette, Indiana. Stewart then scored two goals to help Canada win the 2008 CONCACAF U-20 Women's Championship in Puebla, Mexico, before representing Canada again at the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile. In total, Stewart has earned 15 caps for Canada's U-20 squad, scoring two goals. As a member of Canada's senior national team, Stewart played in four matches at the 2009 Cyprus Cup tournament.
Woeller, 19, has played 707 minutes through eight matches in her second W-League season with the 'Caps women's team after progressing through the Whitecaps Prospects program. Through two seasons with Vancouver, the defensive stalwart has made 13 total appearances for 937 minutes of action.
As a member of Canada's U-20 national side, the 5-foot-8 defender played in eight matches and won a gold medal at the 2008 CONCACAF U-20 Women's Championship in Puebla, Mexico, before representing Canada at the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile. The Vancouver, BC, native has made one appearance with Canada's senior national team. On March 7, 2009, she played in a 2-1 victory versus the Netherlands at the Cyprus Cup.
In addition to Moscato, Robinson, Stewart, and Woeller, Canada's roster includes eight former Whitecaps in goalkeeper Erin McLeod, defenders Candace Chapman, Brittany Timko, and Emily Zurrer, midfielders Kaylyn Kyle and Kara Lang, as well as forwards Jonelle Filigno and Christine Sinclair.
