Four Gold Sox Players Honored by Great West League

The Great West League today announced its list of awards recipients for the 2016 season. The All-Great West League team was voted on by league managers and the announcement was made by League President Ken Wilson.
The Marysville Gold Sox had two players receiving All-Team honors and two more received honorable mentions. Catcher Hunter Stratton was named to the All-GWL First Team and Relief Pitcher Kyle Merkel was named to the All-GWL Second Team. Both players hail from San Diego State where they are attending college and looking to build on their successes for the Gold Sox this season.
First Team award recipient Hunter Stratton led the Gold Sox with a .309 batting average and tied for first on the team with 3 home runs. He also led the team in RBIs and tied for 3rd place in the GWL in that category.
Kyle Merkel finished the season with 10 saves, to lead both the Gold Sox and the Great West League. He fashioned a 1.99 ERA out of the bullpen in 21 appearances which was the second most of any player in the GWL. Merkel also struck out 20 batters in 22.2 innings pitched.
Gold Sox players Dalton DeVries and Ryan McCarthy also received Honorable Mentions by the league. DeVries who will be attending The Masters University(Ca.) in the Fall and was second on the team in batting average with .280. The Gold Sox infielder also led the team in hits (56) and walks (29) and was 3rd and 2nd in the league, respectively in those categories. McCarthy plays ball at Yuba College and led the Gold Sox starters in ERA with 3.17. He pitched 54 innings across 13 games with 40 strikeouts. His record on the year was 7 wins to just 1 loss. "We are very excited to have our players part of this all league team and wish them the best in their upcoming college season in 2017", said GM Michael Mink.
Medford Rogues third baseman Spencer Steer was awarded the GWL Player of the Year and right handed pitcher Stuart Bradley of the Chico Heat was awarded Pitcher of the Year honors. Chico Heat Manager Fred Ludwig was named GWL Manager of the Year to go along with his team's league championship.
