Canada Soccer has invited a group of 30 young players into the Men's EXCEL Program through an identification camp for the 2002 age group, including four players from FC Edmonton Academy. Each selected 14-year-old in the camp is attached to professional club academies in Canada and USA.

The four-day identification camp runs from 14-17 November in Toronto. This marks the 15th men's youth camp in 2016 and the first for players born in 2002.

"One of the reasons we have gone younger in our Academy is to both introduce players to our way of training and playing at an earlier age, as well as match the earliest identification age of the CSA," FC Edmonton Academy technical director Jeff Paulus said. "It remains a goal of our Academy to support the CSA and provide our young players with every opportunity possible to be identified by our national program."

From this age group, players are eligible for CONCACAF/FIFA U-17 competitions until 2018, CONCACAF/FIFA U-20 competitions until 2021, and Olympic competitions (as U-23 players) until 2024.

"The four young players going to this camp is a recognition of the incredible work being done at the club level in Edmonton," Paulus added. "All the credit goes to St. Albert and Juventus soccer clubs for the early development work that has gone into these athletes."

Canada Soccer's Men's EXCEL Program channels our nation's exceptional players into the best soccer environments. The Canada Soccer Pathway works in collaboration with our provincial and territory partners as well as the professional clubs and academies. For Canada's elite players, the program emphasizes player development on the pathway to representing Canada's Men's National Team in international soccer.
