Founders Cup II Logo Unveiled

June 7, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

ATLANTA (Friday, June 7, 2002) - The Women's United Soccer Association unveiled the Founders Cup II logo today and announced that a private sale of tickets will begin June 10. The WUSA's Championship match will take place on Saturday, August 24 at 4:00 p.m. ET at Herndon Stadium in Atlanta, home of the WUSA's Atlanta Beat.

The primary logo for the WUSA's annual championship game features the elegance of the Founders Cup trophy and the official WUSA match ball from Select. In addition, three peaches sit atop the Founders Cup signifying the State of Georgia. The WUSA's color palette of red, white and blue is complimented by the orange peaches and platinum trophy in the logo. The logo will be used on all marketing, promotional and merchandising campaigns associated with the event.

BAT Creative created the logo in conjunction with WUSA Marketing. Founded by Michael Thurman and Brad Bishop, BAT Creative is a Dallas-based graphic design firm which specializes in sports logos and overall team identity programs. For more information, please visit www.batcreative.com.

WUSA season ticket holders and other select members of the soccer community have the opportunity to purchase tickets in advance of the general public during a private sale from June 10 to July 1. Individual ticket prices for Founders Cup II are $50, $40, $30 and $15 for Club, Category 1, Category 2 and Category 3 seating, respectively. Fans attending Atlanta Beat home games on June 15 or June 22 will be among those soccer supporters who will have the opportunity to purchase tickets during the private sale with their orders filled after all other private sale participants. Founders Cup tickets are scheduled to go on sale to the general public in early July.

In addition, tickets are currently available as part of the Atlanta Beat season ticket package. To order season tickets or for more information, call the Beat at (877) SOCCER-1.

All eight WUSA clubs will look to unseat the defending champion San Jose CyberRays and bring home the Founders Cup in 2002. The top four teams in the WUSA will advance to the 2002 playoffs for a chance to be crowned WUSA Champion. Founders Cup II will be broadcast live nationally on PAX TV to more than 90 million households in the United States and several other countries worldwide.

Awarded on April 3, 2002, Founders Cup II is the latest in a long line of championship sporting events for Atlanta. The Empire of the South is best known for hosting the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Other recent championships held in Atlanta include the highly successful 2002 NCAA men's Final Four and Super Bowl XXXIV. In addition, the Atlanta Braves played host to the World Series on a regular basis during the last decade and the Atlanta Hawks will host the 2003 NBA All-Star Game.

The brand-new home to the Atlanta Beat, Herndon Stadium was converted to natural grass before the start of the 2002 WUSA season. With temporary seating planned to supplement the existing 15,011 seats, the Founders Cup II capacity is expected to be approximately 16,500. Built in 1948, Herndon Stadium underwent a $21 million renovation prior to the 1996 Olympic Games, serving as a field hockey venue for the games in Atlanta.

Foxboro Stadium in New England was host to the inaugural Founders Cup on August 25, 2001. The Bay Area CyberRays became the first team in league history to hoist the Founders Cup after defeating the Atlanta Beat 4-2 on penalty kicks following a 3-3 tie in regulation.

VETERAN SPORTS ADMINISTRATOR BILL KNIGHT TO SERVE AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: WUSA President and CEO Lynn Morgan announced today that Bill Knight will serve as Executive Director of the WUSA Founders Cup II. With more than 15 years experience in the sports industry, Knight will oversee all Championship weekend activities, including the Founders Cup and all ancillary events.
