Charge Take on Freedom Saturday

June 7, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
Philadelphia Charge News Release

The Philadelphia Charge take the field again this Saturday, June 8, when they host the Washington Freedom starting at 4 p.m. at Villanova Stadium. The first 3,000 kids 14 and under will receive a limited edition Heather Mitts Bobblehead Doll courtesy of Got Milk.

The first-place Charge are 5-1-1 with 16 points this season and lead the second-place Carolina Courage by two points. Philadelphia played to a 0-0 tie last Saturday against the defending Founders Cup champion San Jose CyberRays. However, despite being held without a goal, the Charge continue to lead the league in offense with 14 goals this season. The club also has the top-ranked defense, yielding only 0.86 goals per game.

Forward Marinette Pichon rejoins the Charge for this weekend's encounter after missing the last game to be with the French National Team. Pichon scored one of her country's two goals in a 2-1 win over Ukraine. She is one of the most exciting forwards to watch in the league, as her scoring ability and speed make her very dangerous.

Rookie Freedom forward and U.S. National Team member Abby Wambach leads Washington in scoring and presents a physical challenge for the Charge back line. Listed at 5-foot-10, the second overall pick in the 2002 WUSA draft has three goals and three assists for nine points this season. She enters the game tied for fifth in the league in scoring.
