Fotopolous Player of the Week

ATLANTA (Monday, May 19, 2003) - Carolina Courage forward Danielle Fotopoulos has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending May 18, 2003. The high-scoring striker played a role in all five goals, as she scored twice and added three assists in a 5-2 win over Washington on Saturday at RFK Stadium.

With her seven-point performance, Fotopoulos now is tied for second all-time in WUSA scoring with 67 points (23 goals, 21 assists). She is one of two players to register 20 or more goals and 20 or more assists (joining Boston's Maren Meinert) during her WUSA career. Additionally, the former University of Florida star's seven points in Saturday's match tie her with Atlanta's Maribel Dominguez and former Philadelphia Charge midfielder Liu Ailing for most points in a WUSA game.

For her first goal, Fotopoulos beat Freedom defender Carrie Moore on a near post run and tapped in Breanna Boyd's cross with her left foot in the fourth minute. In the 39th minute, Fotopoulos scored her second goal of the game with a strike to the left corner of the Freedom net off Unni Lehn's second assist of the match.

With Fotopolous winning the weekly award, it marks the seventh consecutive week a forward has garnered MET-Rx Player of the Week honors. Fotopoulos captured 52 points in the voting (26 first place, 0 second place) to defeat Philadelphia's Marinette Pichon (22 pts). Others who received votes were Atlanta's Cindy Parlow, Conny Pohlers and Briana Scurry along with Philadelphia's Hope Solo, San Diego's Allie Sullivan and Carolina's Erin Baxter.The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
