Quad City Mallards News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (April 11, 2010) - Fort Wayne's Matt Syroczynski scored a hat trick and added one assist as the Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, fell behind 5-1 in the first period and saw a third period comeback bid come up short on the way to an 8-4 loss to the host Komets Sunday. The defeat officially eliminated the Mallards from playoff contention.
The Komets set the tone just 13 seconds into the game when Syroczynski buried Konstantin Shafronov's centering pass.
Sean O'Connor's drive from the high slot extended the Komet lead to 2-0 at 11:43 of the first period. Just 13 seconds later Aaron Spotts pounced on a rebound to score his first career goal and bring the Mallards back within one, but the respite for Quad City would prove brief.
62 seconds after Spotts scored Syroczynski put the Komets back in front by two when his shot from the slot hit the post only to carom off Mallards starting goaltender Jerad Kaufmann and in over the goal line.
At the 16:38 mark David Hukalo's tip-in widened the gap to 4-1. Syroczynski completed his hat trick with Fort Wayne on the power play when his bid from the slot broke in off of Kaufmann just over a minute later. Kaufmann was then replaced in the Quad City cage by Kyle Jones.
The Mallards battled from behind gamely the rest of the way, starting that effort by scoring what would prove to be the only goal of the second period while on a two man advantage. Jacques Perreault's drive from the high slot trimmed the Fort Wayne lead to 5-2 at 10:29 of the second.
Chris Lipsett's backhander from the left wing circle brought Quad City back within two goals 2:37 into the third period. The Komets responded at 6:27 of the4 third when P.C. Drouin's tip-in expanded the Fort Wayne advantage to 6-3. The Mallards would quickly bounce back themelves- Juris Stals struck to make it 6-4 just over a minute and a half after Drouin's goal.
