Amarillo Venom News Release
Amarillo, TX 1/24/11 - Oklahoma Panhandle State University president Dr. Dave Bryant announced today that Jon Lyles has accepted the position of head football coach. Lyles, 34, was the head coach of the Amarillo Venom in 2010 and led the team to a record of 12-4 and brought them all the way to the conference semi-finals.
Lyles replaces Mike Wyatt who passed away in December, shortly after completing his fourth season as head coach of the Aggies.
Lyles said, "I'm overwhelmed with emotion right now and I'm very glad to be coming back to OPSU. I'm getting everything into perspective and very much looking forward to it."
"The Venom organization is so excited to see Coach Lyles get his opportunity to coach in the NCAA. He worked hard for this opportunity and will do a great job," commented General Manager of the Amarillo Venom Joe Morgado.
Coach Lyles is the second head coach of the Venom/Dusters organization to move on to the NCAA. Coach Don Carthel was the Dusters head coach in 2004-2005 and resigned to pursue his career as head coach of WTAMU.
