Texas Tornado News Release
FRISCO, Texas - When defenseman Andy Wozniewski took the ice for the storied Toronto Maple Leafs on October 5, 2005, he became the first former Tornado player to appear in an NHL game. Six years later, he'll be putting on another meaningful sweater: The red, white, and blue of the United States.
Last week, Wozniewski was one of 21 players named to the 2011 U.S. Men's Select Team. They will be competing in the Deutschland Cup, which runs from Nov. 11-13 in Munich, Germany. Though the roster doesn't contain any current NHL players, there are 14 players on the roster who have NHL playing experience, including Wozniewski.
Wozniewski played for the Tornado during the 2000-2001 season, after spending the previous year with UMass-Lowell. He was a First-Team All-NAHL selection with Texas, scoring 44 points in 54 regular season games. His performance also earned him a spot on the 2001 NAHL All-Star Team. During the playoffs, Wozniewski led all NAHL defensemen in scoring with 9 points in 8 games as the Texas Tornado won their first ever Robertson Cup Championship. Wozniewski went back to school to play for the University of Wisconsin, where he accumulated 38 points in three years and was named captain in his senior year.
Wozniewski was signed by Toronto as a free agent prior to the 2005 season and played there for parts of three seasons. He also appeared in games for both the St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins before heading overseas to play for Zug in the Swiss-A League.
The United States will open up their Deutschland Cup play with a game against Slovakia on November 11.
