NEW BEDFORD, MA (Monday, November 28, 2011) - The New Bedford Bay Sox are pleased to announce former major league baseball player Rick Miller has signed a contract to be the new manager for the 2012 season. Miller spent 12 of his 15 major league baseball seasons with the Boston Red Sox and three seasons with the California Angels.

Miller, who has previously coached college ball, but never summer ball, said he is excited to be joining the Bay Sox. He said, "The goals for this summer are to learn, have fun, and win. If we can do that we'll have a successful season."

Miller was an All-American player at Michigan State before being drafted by the Red Sox in the 2nd round. He played with the Boston Red Sox from 1971-1977, which included a spot on the World Series roster in 1975, and then again with the Red Sox from 1981-1985. Miller played for the Angels from 1978-1980, winning a gold glove in 1978 for his play in centerfield.

"Having a manager of the caliber of Rick Miller for the New Bedford Bay Sox is a great start to our upcoming season," said Pat O'Connor, the new president of the team. "The players will appreciate having Rick as their leader. He is an excellent teacher of baseball, with an outstanding resume. Our fans will appreciate getting to know Rick and his community-minded approach to baseball in New Bedford."

After concluding his major league career, Miller ran the Rick Miller Baseball School for 17 seasons, was a baseball coach at Colby-Sawyer College, and managed the Nashua Pride in the Can-Am league for one season.

General Manager Andrew Cormier said, "Rick had a successful major league career. He understands how important the mental aspect of the games is and I think he will help our guys understand that it takes more than just talent to make it to the big time."

The 2012 New Bedford Bay Sox season will start at the beginning of June and extend into early August with the playoffs.
