Former NBA Sharp-Shooter Takes Aim At Local Basketball Camp
July 23, 2002 - NBA G League (G League)
Columbus Riverdragons News Release
COLUMBUS, July 23, 2002 â Columbus Riverdragons head coach Jeff Malone will be featured as a guest instructor for the final session of Herbert Greene's Shooter's Camp on Thursday, August 1 from 6-7 p.m. at the Lumpkin Center on the CSU campus. Malone, a two-time NBA All-Star, will help local players with the same shooting fundamentals the 13-year NBA veteran employed to become one of the league's most accurate shooters during the 80's and early 90's.
"As a player I always took pride in taking good shots," said Malone. "At CSU, I'll work with the kids on shot-selection and emphasize it as one of the most important aspects of the game. Coach Greene has done an excellent job with the Columbus State program. I look forward to working with him as both of our programs continue to build the game of basketball here in Columbus."
The Herbert Greene Shooter's Camp is directed by Herbert Greene, the Columbus State University men's basketball coach, who is entering his 22nd season at the helm of the Division II Cougars. The Shooter's Camp runs from Tuesday, July 30 through Thursday, August 1 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lumpkin Center. For more information on the camp call CSU at 568-2023.
Under Greene, the Cougars have won three conference titles, four PBC Tournament titles, and have made five NCAA appearances, advancing to the Sweet 16 round twice (1996, 2000). The Cougars are coming off a 19-9 record in 2001-02 and return eight players from that squad this year.
A shot-selection specialist in his own right, Malone shot a steady 48.4% from the floor and averaged 19.0 ppg over his 13 seasons in the NBA with Washington (1983-90), Utah (1990-94), Philadelphia (1994-96) and Miami (1996). Malone was also reliable from the free-throw line, hitting a remarkable 87.1% of his foul shots and ranks in the top 15 in NBA history in free throw percentage.
Prior to being selected as the Bullets first round draft choice (10th overall) in the 1983 NBA Draft, Malone distinguished himself as the all-time leading scorer at Mississippi St. scoring 3,851 points in his four seasons with the Bulldogs. Last March, Malone was honored at the 2002 SEC Men's Basketball Tournament as an SEC Legend. Malone has four children and lives with his wife Alicia and family in his hometown of Macon, GA.
Malone is currently preparing for his second season as the Riverdragons head coach, scouting potential additions to the Riverdragons roster at the NBA's prestigious summer leagues in Boston and Utah. Last season, Malone led the Riverdragons to a third-place finish and a trip to the NBDL Playoffs. The Riverdragons finished the postseason just two points shy of advancing to the inaugural NBDL Finals, falling in three games to the eventual champion Greenville Groove.
The Riverdragons open the 2002-03 NBDL season on the road against the defending champion Groove on Friday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the BI-LO Center in Greenville, S.C. The Riverdragons home opener is against the Roanoke Dazzle on Friday, November 22 at the Columbus Civic Center at 7 p.m. Columbus Riverdragons season tickets are available now and start as low as $7 per game. For Riverdragons season tickets call (706) 225-1100.
