Danville Dans News Release
Danville, IL- For less than a week, Matt Wivinis was back in a Danville Dans uniform. The Eastern Illinois University graduate came back after efforts to get on a professional team hadn't come to fruition. He started the Dans game June 28, when he pitched six innings, giving up just one earned run while striking out eight and walking two.
That, and his previous workouts, caught the attention of the Evansville Otters. Wivinis, a Downers Grove, IL native, signed with the Frontier League team yesterday. The right-hand pitcher started 11 games for the Dans in 2015, going 7-3 with a 2.18 ERA. He struck out 54 while walking just 13. This spring at EIU he started 13 games, fanning 79 while walking 31.
Wivinis was able to come back to Danville, taking advantage of a new Prospect League rule that allows teams to sign up to two just-graduated seniors or incoming freshmen.
"It's a great opportunity for Matt to begin his professional career," said Dans managing partner Jeanie Cooke. "While we'll miss having him on our roster, we're excited for Matt's next chapter in baseball."
Danville Dans are a founding member of the Prospect League.
