
Flyers Stifled by Joliet

SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Schaumburg Flyers lost to the Joliet JackHammers on Saturday night, 6-4. The setback at Alexian Field marks the sixth straight loss for Schaumburg. The Flyers' record dropped to 14-23, 33-47 with eight games to go in 2002. Victorious Joliet (24-13, 46-36) found itself in a tie for first place in the Northern League-Central's South Division with Lincoln, who lost Saturday afternoon. Schaumburg's crowd of 6,057 was the fourth-largest at Alexian Field this season.
The Flyers staged a comeback from a 6-2 deficit in the eighth inning, when they scored two runs without the benefit of a hit. With runners at second and third, JackHammers reliever Brent Franklin struck out two batters. Franklin then gave way to bullpen ace Matt Hammons (Save # 20), who struck out 2B Raul Marval looking. With nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Flyers C Chris Finnegan (2-for-4) and LF Steve Foley reached on a base hit and error, respectively. Hammons struck out CF Jason Herrick with runners on first and third to end the game. Joliet's Rickey Lewis (5-7) earned the win over LHP Mike Chaney (7-7)
Joliet got two-run homers from DH Jeff Allen and 1B Bubba Smith. Flyers righties Tommy John III and Evan Fahrner combined for three innings of hitless relief. Schaumburg will play Joliet on Sunday afternoon for the final home game of the 2002 season. The fans at Alexian Field will be treated to Family Day Courtesy of Roosevelt University.
