Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL-Flyers starter Alain Quijano hurled a gem and the Flyers celebrated Independence Day in style with a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones in front of 5,788 fans on the 4th of July at Alexian Field.
The Flyers took an early lead thanks to a three-run home run by Victor Ferrante, his ninth of the season, in the bottom of the first. In that first inning, Ferrante extended his hit streak to eight, Jose Valdez had a single extending his team-high streak to 13 games, and Craig Maddox's single gave him a seven-game hit streak. Kansas City got on the board in the top half of the third thanks to a two-out RBI single by catcher Craig Hurba. But Quijano would shut down the powerful T-Bones the rest of the way, pitching seven strong, giving up one run and striking out six.
Ferrante scored the fourth run for the Flyers in the bottom of the third. He walked, advanced to third on another Maddox single, and scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Jeff Dunbar. But the Flyers were not done putting on a show for the fans on 4th of July. Dunbar struck again in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out, two-RBI single scoring Valdez and TJ Wilson.
The T-Bones rallied in the last two innings, getting one in the eighth and another in the ninth. They brought the tying run to the plate with two outs and the powerful Craig Hurba up, but Cephas Howard induced a game-ending force out at second to seal the Flyers victory.
Schaumburg is now 21-22 on the season while Kansas City falls to 22-22. Quijano got the victory to improve to 2-1 on the season while Luis Villarreal took the loss, falling to 2-3.
The last game of the first half of the season is tomorrow as RHP Ed Almonte (3-4, 4.99) takes the mound for the Flyers against RHP Justin James (3-4, 6.57) for the T-Bones. It will be Family Day at Alexian Field with the first pitch at 1:05.
