Schaumburg Flyers News Release
GARY, IN - An Eric McNamee single with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning scored Steve Haake who had doubled to lead off the inning, and the RailCats outlasted the Flyers 5-4 Friday night at the U.S. Steel Yard.
The Flyers entered the ninth trailing 4-3, but took advantage of a slew of Gary mistakes to tie the game. Felix Jose led off the inning by reaching on an error. Julius Thames pinch-ran and stole second, then took third on a throwing error by the RailCats catcher. Thames would sprint in to tie it up at four on another Gary error, this one off the bat of Jeff Dunbar. The RailCats put two men on in the bottom of the ninth, but Cephas Howard struck out Jordan Czarniecki to wiggle out of the jam.
The Flyers' best chance in extras came when Victor Ferrante led off the 11th with a double. But Ferrante was later caught in a pickle between third and home on a ground ball by Richard Mercado and retired to end the threat.
The first six men of the Flyers' order reached in the first inning off Gary's Chris Pfalzgraf, who had signed earlier in the day and was making his first professional appearance since 2000. The Flyers scored three runs during that first inning. Travis Brown led off the game with a single, but was thrown out trying to steal second in front of back-to-back walks by Jose Valdez and Vince Harrison. Valdez would score when clean-up hitter Felix Jose singled, and Harrison and Jose both came around to score on Jason Colson's bases loaded single to right.
Gary scored twice in the second on a single by Jay Pecci, and tied the game in the third when Jeff Beachum doubled home Anthony Esquer, who had singled. The RailCats would take their first lead in the fourth when Beachum knocked in McNamee.
Carmen Pignatiello went 5.1 for the Flyers, giving up four earned runs and receiving a no-decision. Craig James (2-1) got the loss, with Tom Thornton (3-3), one of six RailCats pitchers used in the game, getting the win.
Game two of the series will take place Saturday night at 6:00 with both starters TBD.
