Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Schaumburg, IL- The Schaumburg Flyers started their 10th season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Thursday night. The Flyers lost in 12 innings by a score of 7-4.
Flyers southpaw Brian Finch pitched seven innings, allowing only one run and also struck out five batters. RedHawks left-handed pitcher Dane Reckert, 13-1 last season, allowed 2 earned runs, six hits and tallied 5 strikeouts in six innings of work.
The solid performances by both starting pitchers were undermined both teams' bullpens. In the eighth inning, Flyers reliever Chris Saenz gave up three runs after getting into trouble with the bases loaded. A heroic 2-run home run by Flyers catcher Ryan Luther in the ninth inning, however, sent the game into extra innings. The home run came off Nate Cotton, who won the Northern League Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Year Award last season.
The game remained scoreless for two more innings, until RedHawks RF Dan Matlock hit a two-run single off of RP David Byard, his third hit of the night. He also hit a home run in the seventh inning, the lone run given up by Finch.
The RedHawks went on to score one more run and hold the Flyers scoreless in the 12th inning. RedHawks pitcher Scott Koerber got the victory and Byard received the loss. The 12-inning game lasted 4 hours and six minutes. 2,509 fans were in attendance. The Flyers next home game is Friday, May 16th against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at 6:45 p.m. at Alexian Field.
The Schaumburg Flyers are a member of the Northern League, a 6-team Independent Professional Baseball League established in 1993. Opening Day is May 15th, 2008. For ticket information call (847) 891-BALL (2255) or visit www.flyersbaseball.com.
