July 4, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Schaumburg, IL - The Flyers (15-28) defeated the RailCats (23-20) 4-2 to earn a series split in their short two game set behind timely hitting and strong pitching. Schaumburg starter Ryan Gehring (3-2) tossed 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs, and struck out three.
The Flyers got on the board early as Brandon Newton led off the bottom of the first with a single. Travis Brown then laid down a sacrifice bunt, which Gary catcher John Parham threw into center field. With men on first and second, Josh Burrus came up and slapped a double down the left field line that scored both Newton and Brown, giving the Flyers an early 2-0 lead.
Gary came back with a couple of runs of their own in the following frame. The inning started with a Cristian Guererro double to deep right center. Two batter later, Louis Ott drove Guererro in on a double of his own. A Mike Rohde single then brought Ott across the plate, tying up the game at two runs a piece.
The Flyers would pick up another run in the fourth after Ron Bourquin singled and was driven in after a Richard Mercado double on a groundout by Joe Nowicki.
The Flyers would pick up one more insurance run in the eighth on a bases loaded Mercado ground out to second. Josh Giles came in with one out in the eight to pitch a 1.2 inning save in relief of Gehring.
Zeb Engle (3-2) took the loss for Gary pitching five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two.
The Flyers begin a three game set with the Rockford RiverHawks at Alexian Field Monday night. It's $1 Hot Dogs at the ballpark, a great reason to get out and support the club.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Join Alex Perlman on 1410 WRMN and flyersbaseball.com for all the action as the Flyers take on the RiverHawks. The Schaumburg Flyers Pregame Show gets rolling at 6:50 PM with the game to follow.
