Flyers Capture Fifth in a Row
June 26, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Kenosha, WI - The Flyers (12-21) didn't win pretty Friday night, but held on to beat the Fielders (11-21) 4-3 at Carthage College.
Lake County starter Garry Bakker (2-4) issued eight walks and Schaumburg picked up just three hits in the win.
The scoring began in the top of the second with a Terry Mermer walk. Tom Fitzgerald tried a sacrifice bunt right back to Bakker, but the pitcher overthrew first, allowing Mermer to score the first run of the game. Bakker then sailed a pitch passed catcher Anthony Esquer to plate Fitzgerald.
The Flyers added two more on a Merrmer sacrifice fly that was originally ruled a hit, but the umpires decided to reverse the call after a conference. Fitzgerald then laced an RBI single into left field to increase the lead to 4-0.
Lake County rallied back with one in the third and two in the fourth off starter Alain Quijano (1-4). Brian McCullough (1-0) came on in relief with the tying run on second and struck out Jeff Dunbar to end the threat, preserving the 4-3 lead.
Joey Gomes drew two walks in the game, but did not collect a hit, snapping his 19 game hit streak.
Quijano went just 4.2 innings, giving up three runs and walking seven. The lefty struck out five, but struggled with his control for much of the night.
McCullough finished the ballgame out, registering the Flyers' longest relief appearance this season. The righty tossed 4.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts, scattering two hits and picking up his first win of the year. Bakker picked up the loss.
The Flyers come back home to continue their series with the Fielders tomorrow night. It's Fireworks Night at Alexian Field, a perfect way to spend time with the family and see a show on the field and in the sky.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM. Join Alex Perlman on 1410 WRMN and flyersbaseball.com for all the action as the Flyers take on the Fielders. The Schaumburg Flyers Pregame Show gets rolling at 5:50 PM with the game to follow.
