GREENVILLE, S.C. (January 16, 2003) 1 The National Basketball Development League kept the waiver wire buzzing today with three of the eight teams making personnel moves, including the return of a 2002 first team All-NBDL performer to the league. Asheville, Greenville and Huntsville all acquired and released a player today, according to NBDL Executive Director Karl Hicks.
Asheville acquired forward Gary Williams and released guard Ryan Carroll, while Huntsville signed guard Ron Riley and released guard LaVall Jordan. Greenville completed the league player transaction trifecta by re-signing center Thomas Hamilton and releasing forward Brandon Kurtz.
Hamilton is no stranger to the NBDL or Greenville, helping the Groove to the inaugural league championship by averaging 10.0 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. He was one of three Groove players selected to the All-NBDL first team. At 7-foot-2 and 340 pounds, Hamilton played collegiately at Pittsburgh ('94). He has NBA experience with Boston and Houston, averaging 3.2 points and 3.4 rebounds over 33 career games.
At 6-7 and 235-pounds, Williams played his college basketball at Southern Cal ('98). He has played professionally in the USBL, EBA, CBA and the IBL. He led the USBL Kansas Cagerz in scoring last season with 20.9 points per game. Williams also has international pro experience, having played in Europe and the Dominican Republic.
Riley, a 6-5, 200-pound guard, played his college basketball at Arizona State ('96). He was a second-round selection (47th overall) of the Seattle Supersonics in the 1996 NBA Draft and has played in the CBA, IBL and for various teams internationally. Most recently Riley averaged 19.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game for the Alaska Aces in the Philippine League.
Carroll played in 25 games for Asheville, averaging 5.3 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Jordan played in 25 games with Huntsville, averaging 1.2 points and 0.7 rebounds. Kurtz played in 24 games for Greenville (22 starts), averaging 9.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Williams, Riley and Hamilton are all expected to be in uniform for their new team's next game.
Riley will wear jersey number 7 for the Flight when North Charleston visits the Von Braun Center Saturday. Williams will wear number 3 for the Altitude in Saturday's game at Greenville before being assigned a permanent number, while Hamilton will be wearing number 30 for the Groove.
