Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - The Florence Y'alls (47-34) dropped a 6-5 series opening loss to the Schaumburg Boomers on Friday night.
After the rain postponed his start yesterday, Nathan Lawson took the hill for Florence in a possible playoff preview. Lawson delivered a 1-2-3 opening frame before surrendering a run in each of the next three innings. The WKU alum finished his outing with a scoreless fifth, ending his line with three runs on seven hits across five complete frames.
Schaumburg's LHP Cole Cook stymied Florence's offense early. Marcus Brodil's sacrifice fly in the fourth put the Y'alls on the board, trailing 3-1.
Jake Lynch was first out of the bullpen and couldn't record an out, loading the bases before being pulled in favor of Will Carsten. The San Antonio native allowed a run on a wild pitch but worked some magic to escape the jam with minimal damage.
Down 4-1, Hank Zeisler launched a solo shot to leadoff the bottom of the sixth, his 21st homer of the season. The Captain ignited the bats, and Brett Blomquist followed with a two-run blast of his own, deep into the Florence night to tie the game at 4-4.
Danny Heintz came on in the eighth, having not allowed a run across his first 9.2 innings with Florence. Schaumburg ambushed him with three consecutive hits from the bottom of their order to take a 6-4 lead. Jett Lodes relieved him with two outs in the eighth to end the inning and picked up a scoreless ninth as well.
Florence got one back in the bottom of the eighth when Cole Brannen ripped a double down the left field line to score Dillon Baker. Unfortunately, Brannen tried to stretch the hit into a triple and was tagged out at third, ending the inning for what would've been the tying run in scoring position. Florence was blanked by Schaumburg's All-Star closer in the ninth to fall 6-5.
Florence and Schaumburg will battle again tomorrow on Latin Heritage Night at Thomas More Stadium. RHP Ryan Furey makes his debut for Florence and opposes Schaumburg's RHP Cole Zaffiro. First pitch is set for 6:36 PM.
