Western New York Flash News Release
BUFFALO, N.Y. (July 18, 2011) - The Western New York Flash (7-2-2, 23 points) of Women's Professional Soccer will host magicJack (5-4-1, 15 points) in front of an anticipated sold-out crowd of around 13,500 at 7:30 p.m. at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester, NY on Wednesday evening.
Players of the United States Women's National Team, including the Flash's Alex Morgan and magicJack's Abby Wambach along with other FIFA World Cup stars such as Christine Sinclair and Marta, will be honored in front of the huge crowd. Also rostered for the magicJack squad from the Women's World Cup are USWNT players Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn and Jillian Loydon as well as Australia's Lisa DeVanna and Canada's Sophie Schmidt.
The WNY Flash and magicJack last met on May 22nd at Sahlen's Stadium, in front of a crowd of 8,076. The game was a thrilling matchup between the league's two undefeated top teams. The Flash came out on top, defeating magicJack 3-0. That crowd was the second largest in WPS history, behind the league's inaugural game in 2009 at the Home Depot Center, with an attendance of 14,832. The crowd for Wednesday's match is anticipated to be the second largest in WPS history, with the excitement from the Women's World Cup continuing after Team USA's incredible run to the final. USA eventually fell to the Japanese in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 120 minutes of football. In all, 36 WPS players participated in the tournament. In order to meet the demand for tickets, Sahlen's Stadium has opened up reserved end seating behind the goal and upper deck for fans.
The Flash are coming off a 2-0 win over Sky Blue FC on Sunday, handing Sky Blue their first home loss of the season. Midfielder Beverly Goebel scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Christine Sinclair. The other tally for the Flash was an own goal by Sky Blue.
"We're coming off a solid road performance this weekend in New Jersey. It was good for us to get back on track and good for our confidence heading into this match. We're excited to be back at home in front of a sell out crowd and are looking to build on our performance from this past weekend," Head Coach Aaran Lines says.
The WNY Flash will be back to their full roster, including FIFA five-time player of the year and Brazilian superstar, Marta, who will play in her first game back to the Flash since Brazil's dramatic loss in penalty kicks to the U.S. in the World Cup. Marta was a constant thorn in Team USA's side, scoring two goals in the match. The Flash will also have forward Alex Morgan, who scored a goal and had an assist in the World Cup Final on Sunday. The Flash's forward line will be back in full throttle, which consists of Marta, Morgan and Canada's leading goal scorer, Christine Sinclair.
Rochester native and magicJack forward Wambach had four goals in this year's World Cup for the USA, providing for a very enthused and proud hometown. Sponsor MVP healthcare will be giving away Abby Wambach bobble heads to the first 1,000 fans. Additionally, the Mazda dealers of Buffalo and Rochester will be raffling off a free two year lease for a Mazda vehicle. To enter the raffle, bring donations such as lightly used or new clothing, baby supplies, and books for the Monroe and Ontario County foster families. The Gates at Sahlen's Stadium open at 6:30 p.m.
