Flash Fall to Independence on the Road, 2-1

In a battle of the league's top two teams, the Philadelphia Independence (7-2-3; 24 pts.) beat the under strength Western NY Flash (6-2-2; 20 pts.) by a score of2-1.

Saturday's game welcomed a packed Widener stadium, 90-degree heat, members of the Spanish press, the WPS Commissioner, and a delegation of United Arab Emirates (UAE) women's soccer players.

Tasha Kai jump-started the game earlyin the 9'.This was Kai's eighth goal of the season and her fourth goal in just two games.

Late in the first half, in the 44', Sinead Farrelly scored the second goal of the game, giving the Independence a 2-0 lead and picking up her first career WPS goal. Farrelly'sgoal came off of a shot byKai that deflected off the post,for what ended up being the team's game winning goal.

The Flash picked up momentum in the second half, with Canadian National Team player Christine Sinclair coming off the bench making her first appearance with the club since Canada's exit in the FIFA Women's World Cup last week. In the 81' Gemma Davison was taken down in the box and the Flash were rewarded with a PK, which Sinclair coverted.The Flash continued to put the pressure on, attacking down the flanks and sending crosses in, but were unable to convert for the equalizer. The Flash will head to New Jersey next, where they will face Sky Blue FC on Sunday, July 17 at 6:00 PM. The game will be live on Fox Soccer Channel.
