Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fl - Despite rallying back from a 7-1 deficit, the Clearwater Threshers fell to the Lakeland Flying Tigers in the six-game series finale 8-6 in front of 8,017 on Sunday night at BayCare Ballpark.

Left-hander Matt Osterberg made the start for Clearwater on the mound, allowing seven runs, only two earned, on 11 hits while striking out four in 3.2 innings of work.

The Flying Tigers (6-2, 38-36) opened the scoring in the second inning, making it 2-0 before the Threshers (2-7, 37-37) scratched one across in the third on an RBI sac-fly by Leandro Pineda.

Lakeland pushed home five runs in the fourth off Osterberg, including a two-run home run by Manuel Sequera following a costly error by left fielder Wilfredo Flores.

Trailing 7-1 in the fifth, the Threshers stormed back with five runs of their own. Shortstop Erick Brito slashed an RBI double, Kendall Simmons cleared the bases with a three-run triple, and Nicolas Torres secured an RBI infield single to trim the deficit to 7-6.

Right-hander Carlos Betancourt allowed a leadoff double and RBI groundout in the eighth, giving the visitors an insurance to make it 8-6.

After loading the bases with one out in the ninth, trailing 8-6, Simmons struck out and Torres grounded out to end the threat as the Flying Tigers secured five win in the six-game set.

Clearwater returns to action on Monday, July 4, opening a six-game series, and 12-game road trip, against the Dunedin Blue Jays. First pitch at TD Ballpark is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Coverage on the Threshers Broadcasting Network will begin at 4:50 p.m.
