Arriving late in FC Edmonton's 2016 North American Soccer League (NASL) season did little to prevent midfielder Ben Fisk from making an impact this past year.

The 23-year-old quickly became a regular starter in head coach Colin Miller's Starting XI lineup following his arrival and added an attacking flare to the lineup that paid off late in the season as FC Edmonton pursued a spot in the NASL postseason.

A product of Vancouver, British Columbia, Fisk made a total of 16 appearances in the Fall and added a pair of goals down the home stretch for the club. His regular season play that included one Player of the Week and three Team of the Week honours earned him a nomination for the 2016 NASL Young Player Of The Year award.

"I think it's credit to Colin for easing me into the team so that when I did get my chance to start playing I felt very at home playing with the other players on the squad," Fisk explained. "I think he really set me up for success in that regard."

FC Edmonton's season concluded with an NASL semifinal appearance, the teams first postseason berth in half a decade. Fisk then returned home to the west coast following the season.

Aside from a quick vacation to Cuba, it has been a busy offseason for the young talent.

"One of the things Colin wanted me to do was put on a bit of muscle over the offseason," Fisk explained. "I've been working hard in the gym on that and trying to stay fit. When I knew I was heading into the national team camp that was another thing that I had to make sure I was ready to go for.

"Being back on a team within Canada has put me on the radar for the national team. The coaching staff and everyone at the national program is able to watch all my games at FC Edmonton and monitor me a lot more closely."

Fisk's return to Canada's national team setup saw him selected to the 18-man roster ahead of the team's first international friendly of 2017 against Bermuda. The midfielder then earned his first senior cap after being selected to the Starting XI in an eventual 4-2 Canada victory.

"Getting into camp I was feeling sharp and was able to impress the coaches enough to make the final squad against Bermuda," Fisk said. "Getting my first cap was icing on the cake."

With the 2017 NASL season drawing near, Fisk's focus has now shifted to back to FC Edmonton.

"My objectives coming back to Edmonton is to be one of the first names on the team sheet when Gaffer is deciding the Starting XI. I want to be a key player for the team and help the team win a championship. I think last year year we had a great squad and this year we can go one step farther to the championship match and win it."
