Port Huron Flags News Release
(PORT HURON, MICH.) - In game three of the Elmira series, the Port Huron Flags lost in the first shoot-out of the United Hockey League regular season, 3-2, against the visiting Jackals.
Both teams battled ferociously in the first period. Although Port Huron was called for five penalties, a superior effort from Goalie Noah Ruden kept the Jackals from capitalizing on any power plays. Center Steve Hildenbrand scored first for the Flags, at 17:19, assisted by Greg Bullock and Chris Pittman. A five-on-three Elmira advantage at the end of the period would have given the Jackals an opportunity to even the score, but Ruden and the Flags defense were a solid wall in front of the net. Elmira's nine shots on goal were bested by Port Huron's 16.
The second period progressed similar to the first, with only a handful of penalties across the board, and another Flags' goal. At 17:19, Bullock took the honors, with the assist from Hildenbrand. Elmira shot 15 times on Port Huron's net, but Ruden stayed strong, allowing nothing. Port Huron took eight shots on goal.
Elmira used the third period to its advantage, tying up the score with a goal from David Morelli and Dale Lupul, at 6:43 and 11:15, respectively. Few penalties kept the pace of the period quick, and the game went to the first UHL shoot-out of the regular season.
Erik Anderson shot first for the Jackals, scoring on Ruden. Pittman was unable to capitalize against Kris Tebbs, and Ruden deflected Scott Wray's attempt. Jeff Cameron was stopped short by Tebbs, and Yevgeny Lazarev scored again for Elmira. Hildenbrand missed, followed by a Lupul goal, which sealed the deal for the Jackals.
Attendance was low at McMorran Arena, with 1301 sold tickets, due to the Detroit Tigers game two in the World Series.
AT&T's Three Stars of the Game were awarded to Morelli (third), Mark Cadotte (second), and Anderson (first). The Flags travel to Muskegon next Friday, Oct. 27, to take on the undefeated Fury. Then they return to McMorran on Saturday to face the Quad City Mallards.
