SAN JOSE, CALIF September 4, 2008-Catcher Buster Posey, San Francisco's top pick in this year's draft, will join San Jose when the Giants open the playoffs this Saturday at 6:00 PM at Municipal Stadium.
Posey, who was selected fifth overall out of Florida State University, will be playing for his third team in just a week. Posey helped the ARL-Giants (Rookie) to the league championship last weekend before a three-day stint with Salem-Keizer (Short-Season) during which time the Volcanoes won the division crown.
The 21-year old backstop won every major college Player of the Year award in 2008 capturing the Golden Spikes Award, Dick Howser Trophy and Brooks Wallace Award in addition to claiming the Johnny Bench Award given to the nation's top collegiate catcher. Posey was named Player of the Year by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball after leading the country in batting average (.463), hits (119), RBI's (93), total bases (226), slugging percentage (.879) and on-base percentage (.566). In just 68 games with Florida State, Posey tallied 26 home runs.
After signing his professional contract, Posey joined the ARL-Giants on August 22nd and made an immediate impact, hitting .385 with one home run and four RBI's over seven games. After the club won the Arizona League championship, Posey was promoted to Salem-Keizer, where he helped the Volcanoes secure the 2008 West Division title. In the Northwest League, Posey played in just three games and collected three hits in 11 at-bats with a pair of RBI's. His rapid ascension through the San Francisco farm system now takes the catcher to San Jose where he'll join the Giants for the start of the California League playoffs.
