Georgia Fire News Release
ROME, GA (April 24, 2014) - Heading south for second time in three weeks, the Georgia Fire (1-1) of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) take on inter-state and conference foe Columbus (2-2) with no shortage of points scored expected between the two.
Having just taken their second bye, the Fire are into the 2014 season for the long haul with the ten game stretch beginning this weekend in Columbus. Just as equally important is the ability for the club not to fall behind in the first half of the season as they are in the mid-way stretch of five consecutive games versus inter-conference foes. Conference matchups could prove to be vital down the stretch when jockeying for the two playoff spots out of the American Conference.
Georgia enters Saturday's contest with Columbus after previously getting demolished by the Lions 71-34 back on April 12th . Whatever QB Antwon Young wanted as a passer he got that night completing all seven of his touchdown passes on throws of 13 yards or more including three of 40 yards or more. En route to earning the PIFL Offensive Player of the Week for Week 3, Lions WR Earl Alexander hauled in four receptions for 120 yards and three touchdowns.
Last weekend, the Lions two-game winning streak was snapped with a thrilling 66-63 loss to the Trenton Freedom. Columbus held a 14 point lead on two different occasions but a key turnover at the start of the second half along with Trenton scoring six consecutive touchdowns to close out the game proved to be too much for the Lions to hold on.
In that April 12th meeting versus Columbus, the Fire offense seemed discombobulated scoring just one touchdown in the clubs first six possessions. Led by back-up QB Chris Mitchell, they went 2 for 11 on third down conversions with three turnovers and had two field goals blocked. Starting QB Cecil Lester is expected to return to the starting line-up after having a scheduling conflict that held him out of the April 12th contest.
Combined with the high potent offense of Columbus and the return of Lester, fans should expect fireworks aplenty come Saturday. The Lions are only one of three teams in the PIFL to have scored 40 points or more in all of their games and Lester has led his teams to score 50 or more points 18 times over the past two plus seasons. All-time versus Columbus, Lester is 10-3 which also includes a 4-2 record in Columbus.
