Finishing touches put on All-Star festivities in San Angelo
Published on July 14, 2008 under United League Baseball (ULB) News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - With slightly more than 24 hours until first pitch of the inaugural United League-Golden League All-Star Game, the final pieces of the puzzle are coming together in San Angelo. Firstly, United League Baseball (ULB) announced today that there will be two replacements for the ULB All-Star Team. Outfielder Keith Brachold and third baseman Gary Schneidmiller, both from the first-half champion Amarillo Dillas, will be unable to play in the game due to injuries. To replace them, All-Star Team manager Ricky VanAsselberg has selected outfielder Palmer Karr and infielder Rafael Ozuna, both from the Alexandria Aces. Karr has a .292 average in 57 games with 14 doubles, 13 home runs (third in the league), 46 RBIs, and nine stolen bases. The fourth-year pro was an All-Star last season in the United League and was also named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship Series in 2007, batting .375 with three homers and 11 RBIs as the Aces swept the WhiteWings four games to none to win their second straight championship. Ozuna joined the Aces in mid-June and in 21 games he has posted a .299 average with four doubles, one triple, five home runs, and 19 RBIs. The United League has also announced the four participants for the Home Run Derby, which will begin at Foster Field at 5:00 p.m. CT, slightly more than two hours before the game begins. The four ULB sluggers are: Danny Bravo (Amarillo), Andres Rodriguez (San Angelo), Bryan Sabatella (Alexandria), and Luany Sanchez (Laredo), who leads the league with 17 homers. Rodriguez has 11 dingers, and Sabatella and Bravo each have 10. The four representatives for the Golden League have also been announced; they are: Patrick Breen (Orange County), Ryan Stevenson (St. George), Drew Miller (Calgary), and Norm Hutchins (Long Beach). Breen (17 home runs, leads league), Stevenson (14, 2nd), and Miller (13, 5th) are all in the top five in the league in homers while Hutchins has 11 in 41 games. There will be three rounds with eight outs per batter and the top two from each league will advance into the second round, which will produce one contestant from each league for the final round. Finally, the All-Star Meet and Greet tonight, Monday, July 14, will now begin at 6:30 p.m. at Blaine's Pub in downtown San Angelo (10 W. Harris Avenue). Fans can mingle with the All-Stars from both leagues, and get great entertainment from Austin Powers impersonator "Airwave Dave."
The first ever All-Star Game between the United League and Golden League will take place Tuesday night, July 15, at Foster Field in San Angelo, TX. The Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest and the Home Run Derby will precede the game and post-game fireworks, sponsored by Adobe Signs and T-shirts, will follow the historic match-up.
