Final Week of UIF Regular Season Approaches
July 7, 2006 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF) News Release
EVANSVILLE BLUECATS (7-7), at SIOUX FALLS STORM (14-0) - Evansville is on a franchise record winning streak by winning four games in a row. The BlueCats defense has been dominating over the win streak as opponents are averaging less than 28 points per game. Linebacker John Winchester has been the leader of the defense this season as he is second in the league in tackles with 108.5. The BlueCats defense has created the fourth most turnovers in the UIF with 29 and recorded the third most sacks in the league with 23. Defensive lineman Demoine Adams leads the team and is ranked seventh in the league in sacks with six, despite playing in only nine games this season. The BlueCats need the Omaha Beef to lose against the Ft. Wayne Freedom in order to take the fourth seed and home field advantage in the first round; assuming that the BlueCats take the Storm for a victory. The Storm clinched home field advantage throughout the UIF Playoffs with their victory last week, and will rest next weekend as they take one of the two byes in the playoffs. Quarterback Terrance Bryant threw seven touchdown passes last week and may have sealed the MVP award with that performance (he was named Offensive Player of the Week). Bryant is second in the UIF in touchdown passes with 51, third in passing yards with 2,152, and 8th in rushing touchdowns with 8. Game time is slated for 7:05 pm CST at the Sioux Falls Arena, "The Storm Shelter."
FT. WAYNE FREEDOM (4-10), at OMAHA BEEF (7-7) - Fort Wayne was officially knocked out of playoff contention with their loss to Lexington last week. The Freedom lead the UIF in rushing yards with 1,257 and are gaining the fifth most offensive yards in the league. Those yards are not translating to points as Fort Wayne is only averaging 35.0 points per game, which ranks eighth in the UIF. With their win last week, the Beef clinched a playoff spot and a victory this week would give the Beef home field advantage in the first round and take the fourth seed. Omaha is currently tied with Evansville for the #4 seed. Quarterback Andy Majors and running back RJ Rollins provided a 1-2 punch that accounted for 114 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in the win over Sioux City last week. The Beef gained 133 yards on the ground in the game compared to only 101 yards through the air. The Beef defense makes them a dangerous team to play in the playoffs as they have allowed the third least points in the UIF at 34.6 points per game, led by star linebackers Chris Eads and Randy Stella. Kick-off will start at 7:05 pm CST at the Omaha Civic Auditorium, "The Slaughter House."
LEXINGTON HORSEMEN (12-2), at BLOOMINGTON EXTREME (5-9) - The Horsemen secured a first-round bye in the UIF playoffs with their win in Fort Wayne last week. Lexington will have the #2 seed in the playoffs. With six touchdown passes last week, Horsemen quarterback Eddie Eviston tied the UIF record for most touchdown passes in a season. He shares the record with former Horsemen quarterback and current General Manager, Dusty Bonner. Wide receiver Harry Lewis broke the UIF record for most touchdown receptions in a season last week. Lewis has 19 touchdown receptions and with two more receptions, he will also break the UIF record for most receptions in a season. Bloomington was eliminated from playoff contention with their loss last week as Ohio Valley owns all tie-breakers over the Extreme. Wide receiver Reggie Gray has had good performances over the last two weeks. Gray has compiled 13 receptions for 169 yards and 4 touchdowns during that time. If the Greyhounds lose and both Bloomington and Sioux City win for a three way tie for the sixth seed, the Ohio Valley Greyhounds will take the final spot. Bloomington's win will keep the Bandits out of the post season, even though the Bandits hold the tie breaker over the Hounds. Game time is at 7:05 pm CST at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
PEORIA ROUGH RIDERS (0-14), at SIOUX CITY BANDITS (5-9) - Peoria played their closest game since Week 1 in their loss to Rock River last Saturday. The Rough Riders held an eight point lead in the 4th quarter before letting the Raptors score 14 unanswered points. The Rough Rider defense held Rock River to only 38 points, which is the second least amount that Peoria has given up all year. The Rough Riders may have found a way to win by using running back Adell Hawks. Hawks played in 13 games this season, but by far had his best output of the season last week. Hawks rushed for 86 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Hawks was underused throughout the season as he had only 117 rushing yards and one touchdown going into the game last week. Losing their last four games has hurt the Bandits playoff chances, but they are not completely out of it yet. The only way for the Bandits to make the playoffs is with a win over Peoria and losses by both Ohio Valley (@ Rock River) and Bloomington (Lexington). Sioux Ctiy can only receive the #6 seed in the playoffs and will travel to Rock River next week if the Bandits qualify for the playoffs. The Tyson's Event Center will host the game in Sioux City, IA with a 7:05 pm CST kick-off.
OHIO VALLEY GREYHOUNDS (6-8), at ROCK RIVER RAPTORS (10-4) - Ohio Valley is in the driver's seat for the final playoff spot. It's easy for the Hounds, win and you're in. But they have one problem, the number 3 seed stands in their way. If Ohio Valley loses, they must also hope for a loss by Sioux City, who plays Peoria. The Greyhounds have lost three in a row down the stretch including 2-point loses in the last two weeks. Ohio Valley quarterback Matt Kohn broke the UIF record for most passing yards in a season last week. Kohn currently has 2,613 yards, while the previous record was held by Dusty Bonner with 2,547. Rock River was guarenteed the #3 seed in the UIF playoffs after Lexington got their 12th victory last week. The Raptors will host the #6 seed next week at the Metro Centre. Defensive linemen Fernandez Shaw is second in the league in sacks with 13.5 and the Raptors rank second in the UIF with 24 sacks as a team. Running back Randy Bell has recorded 20 touchdowns this season which ranks fifth in the UIF. Kick-off begins at 7:30 pm CST at the Metro Centre, "The Rock Pile."
