Surprise Fightin' Falcons News Release

The streak is over for the Surprise Fightin' Falcons, thanks to a dramatic late-game rally. Surprise scored seven runs in the eighth and ninth innings - including five in the ninth - to rally from six down to post a 14-13 win over the San Diego Surf Dawgs Thursday night at Surprise Stadium.

The Falcons were on their way to losing their eighth straight before an error to open the ninth started the rally. After Gavin Monjaras reached on the error, Kevin Brand and David Nowak were each hit by pitches to load the bases.

San Diego closer John Boker entered the game and walked Billy Brown to force in a run before Leif Ekelund singled two more home to make it 13-11. Desi Wilson and Jay Yaconetti then hit consecutive sacrifice flies to tie the game, sending Ekelund to third base. Ekelund then scored when Surf Dawgs catcher Zach Riggan allowed a pass ball that scored Ekelund with the winning run.

The win helped make up for a night when starter James Beever did not have his best stuff. The right-hander gave up eight runs in 4-1/3 innings, but avoided the loss with the late rally. Instead, Brett Grebe (1-0) earned his first win for the Falcons after pitching a perfect top of the ninth.

Three Falcons collected three hits in the game - Brown, Wilson and Yaconetti, who had four RBIs. Wilson, the Golden Baseball League's top hitter, went 3-for-4 for the second straight night after seeing his 30-game hitting streak snapped Monday.

Surprise next takes on the Japan Samurai Bears in a three-game series Friday through Sunday. LHP Chris Russ (2-4, 5.58) pitches in the first game for the Falcons. Tickets are available by calling (623) 537-5784 or at www.surprisefightinfalcons.com
