Fifty-Eight Coastal Plain League Alums in 2013 MLB Spring Training Camps

March 7, 2013 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) News Release

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. - The Coastal Plain League is well represented across Spring Training as there are 58 CPL alums highlighting rosters in both the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues in 2013.

Of the 30 major league teams, 26 of them are represented by at least one CPL alum in camp. The CPL had 44 alums invited to spring training in 2012 and 50 back in 2011.

The American League had 30 CPL alums while 28 came from teams in the National League. Of the 58 players in spring training, 40 of them have experience in the majors, having made their respective debuts in prior seasons. Ten of those - J.J. Hoover (Cincinnati), D.J. Mitchell (New York - AL), Kevin Mattison (Miami), Adam Warren (New York - AL) Josh Edgin (New York - NL), Carter Capps (Seattle), Tom Layne (San Deigo), David Lough (Kansas City), Tom Koehler (Miami) and Andrew Taylor (Los Angeles - AL) - debuted in 2012.

All current CPL clubs (noting that Forest City shares Spartanburg's history, and the same for Morehead City and New Bern) were represented with at least one alum invited to spring training. Wilson led all CPL clubs with nine alums, while Edenton was next with eight. Thomasville and Wilmington followed closely with seven each. Fayetteville and Florence were next with six alumni each. Meanwhile, Forest City and Peninsula each had four representatives; and Martinsville had three. Asheboro, Gastonia, Morehead City and Petersburg were next with two alums each. Finally, Columbia had one alum, while former franchises Durham, Outer Banks and Rocky Mount also were represented with one alum each.
