Danbury Titans News Release
DANBURY, CT -- Looking to recover from a two game losing streak, the Danbury Titans hosted the Danville Dashers on Thursday night in the first of four games in four nights for the Titans. With two goals each from Tyler Gjurich and Kory Helowka, the Titans were able to rebound from some early defensive mistakes to topple the first place Dashers by a score of 5-3. For the Titans, the victory is their 6th in 8 meetings so far in the season.
The Dashers quickly sprinted out to a two goal lead as AJ Tesoriero scored just 54 seconds into the game, catching Titans starting goaltender Mike Peerless leaning the wrong way and tucking the puck inside the far side post. Tesoriero's 13th goal of the season was assisted by Justin Brausen and Gehrett Sargis. Defenseman Myles McCauley would extend the lead to two as he led a rush from his own end, finishing with a backhand that found its way over the shoulder of Peerless. Nathan Judd-Warren and Brausen would collect the assists. The Titans were finally able to settle down defensively and begin to push back, helped by their first power play opportunity of the night. While they did not connect on the man advantage, Brett Liscomb was in the right place at the right time, sending home a rebound past Danville goaltender Matt Anthony. Shots on goal were even between the two teams in the first period at 10-10
Danbury was able to build on their momentum in the second period as Kory Helowka recorded his first multigoal game in a Titans uniform, scoring twice in the period as Danbury took their first lead of the game. Helowka's first came off a scramble in front of the Danville net, as a bouncing puck found its way onto Helowka's stick and he floated the puck over the outstretched body of Matt Anthony. Helowka would score his second later in the period after springing loose for a breakaway courtesy of Bryan Dallaire's finesse with the puck in the neutral zone. For Helowka, it was his 6th and 7th goals of the season, and the Titans would not relinquish the lead past that point. Danbury led things offensively during the period, outshooting Danville 16-9.
The third period saw both teams try to clamp down defensively, but the Titans were able to keep the pressure on in the offensive zone. They were finally rewarded at the 11:15 mark as Tyler Gjurich scored his team leading 24th goal of the season. Brett Liscomb and Zach Tatrn received the assists. AJ Tesoriero tried to make things interesting with a power play goal at 15:14, but the Titans answered immediately as Gjurich would score his second of the night from a highlight reel pass off the stick of John Scorcia. Ryan Patsch was able to keep a bouncing puck in the zone at the blue line, and he propelled it into the nearside corner where John Scorcia was waiting. Scorcia, in one motion, managed to knock the fluttering puck through his legs to a wide open Gjurich in front, and Gjurich's quick deke sent Matt Anthony to the ice and the puck into the back of the net. With his two goals, Tyler Gjurich again leads the league in goals with 25, and this after missing games by being called up to the ECHL. Danville would outshoot the Titans 14-11 in the period, but Danbury would end the game with a 37-34 shot advantage.
Brett Liscomb, with a goal and two assists earned 3rd star honors, and Kory Helowka's two goals and an assist would receive the 2nd star. With the two goals, including the game winner, and an assist, Tyler Gjurich was named the 1st star of the game for a league leading fifth time this season. Mike Peerless got retribution for last week's game by making 31 saves and recording his 5th win of the season. The Danbury Titans will be in action again tomorrow night, January 15th, as they travel to Berlin, NH, to face the RiverDrivers. The Titans will then wrap up the weekend with two home games, hosting the Brewster Bulldogs on Saturday night with a 7:35pm faceoff, and meeting the Berlin RiverDrivers again on Sunday, a matinee with a scheduled 5:05pm start.
