Ferris State-Michigan Tech "Battle at the Ballpark" football game up next at Fifth Third Ballpark

September 17, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL) - West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Now that baseball season is finished at Fifth Third Ballpark, the home of the Whitecaps is gearing up to host several football games. First on the ballpark's fall schedule is the "Battle at the Ballpark," a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup between the Ferris State Bulldogs and the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday, October 3 at 7 p.m.

Ferris State, located in Big Rapids, will be the home team for the contest. The Bulldogs are currently 1-2 on the season going into this Saturday's matchup against top-ranked Grand Valley State University. Michigan Tech, located in Houghton in the Upper Peninsula, is 0-2 after a second-half rally fell short last weekend at Ashland.

While Fifth Third Ballpark is primarily used for Minor League baseball games, the venue has played host to a multitude of other events in recent years, including concerts, high school and college baseball games and carnivals. The Ferris State-Michigan Tech game will be the second college football game to be played at Fifth Third Ballpark; the first was in 2007 when Grand Valley State defeated Wayne State in a GLIAC game. The ballpark also hosted two high school football games in 2008 and has two more high school games scheduled for October (Forest Hills Northern/Coopersville on Oct. 9 and Caledona/Catholic Central on Oct. 16).

Ferris State Athletic Director Thomas Kirinovic said the Fifth Third Ballpark location allows the many Ferris State alumni who live in the Grand Rapids area to have convenient access to see their alma mater play in a GLIAC matchup.

"We are very excited to be able to play a football game in this outstanding venue," Kirinovic said. "The opportunity to further provide visibility for Ferris State University in the Grand Rapids area is tremendous for our football program. We are looking to provide a quality game experience for all the great football fans that live throughout West Michigan."

Tickets for the football game are $10 each, while Ferris State college students who show their ID will pay $5 for student tickets. All seats are general admission. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling the Whitecaps at (616) 784-4131 or online at www.whitecapsbaseball.com. Three Rocket football games will be held earlier in the day, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Gates for the Rocket football games open at 11 a.m., and gates for the Ferris State/Michigan Tech game open at 5:30 p.m.
