Whalers Tighten Up the Race for First Place
By: Nick Magoulas
Danbury CT- Before the game Saturday night, the FHL presented their annual awards to the best players in the league for 2013-2014. Cody Ayers (MVP)and Mike Brown(Best Goaltender) were amongst the Whalers who skated away with some hardware, along with Ryan Patsch and Tim Richter, who were awarded the Co-Rookie of the Year awards. On this night, the two young Whaler superstars showed exactly why it was impossible to give the award to just one or the other. Both players collected two goals apiece and Mike Brown made 37 saves as the Whalers defeated the Dayton Demonz and kept their first place hopes alive with a 4-1 victory.
The home team wasted very little time getting the scoring started as CT native and Co-Rookie of the Year Tim Richter would light the lamp just 1:54 into the game. A Jesse Felten turnover allowed David Lun to carry the puck into the slot and feed a perfect pass across the crease to Richter who beat Demonz goalie Jeff Rose for his 25th of the season. It wouldn't take long for Richter to cash in again, as he would collect his 26th of the year at 5:02 of the opening frame. Julian Fraser's initial shot got deflected into the air and Cody Ayers knocked the puck off Jeff Rose to the stick of Richter who pushed it over the goal line and give the Whalers the 2-0 lead. The Demonz would answer with a quick answer goal at 6:59 to cut the lead to 2-1. After the Whalers were unable to clear the zone, the loose puck came to the stick of August Aiken in the slot who sent a quick wrister past Mike Brown for his 32nd of the season.
The Second period was a much more physical and chippie one, capped off by the feisty scrap between Brett Wall and Tim Richter. After Brett Wall received a cross checking penalty and Roger Tagoona collected a four minute double minor for elbowing, the Whalers found themselves with a 5 on 3 advantage for fifty-five seconds. With just one second remaining on the first penalty, Ryan Patsch made a pretty move to the front of the goal and roofed a shot over the glove of Rose to make it 3-1. Just seventeen seconds later, Patsch struck again on the power play, as he banged home a beautiful feed from James Sanford to make it a three goal lead. Sanford made an incredible play by stick handling in and out of the Dayton defense and making a nifty behind the back pass across the crease to a waiting Patsch. It was the 26th and 27th goals of the season for the other Whalers Co-Rookie of the Year.
In the third period the Whalers continued to frustrate the Demonz offense with a solid shut down game in the neutral zone. At 13:28 Garret Peters put the game away with his 4th goal of the season. David Lun's pass off the end boards somehow caromed out in front of the Demonz goal where Peters knocked the puck out of midair off Rose and into the net. Jeff Rose finished with 31 saves in the defeat.
Game Notes: The Whalers finished 2 for 4 on the power play while the Demonz were 0 for 3... The Whalers are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they play host to the Watertown Privateers in the final game of their current home stand and the last home game of the regular season. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:05.
