Whalers Down Privateers
Nick Magoulas
Danbury,CT- On a Thanksgiving Eve in Danbury one would assume many of the Whalers were thinking about stuffing their stomachs with food tomorrow afternoon. Well that thinking definitely translated onto the ice because the Whalers proceeded to stuff the Watertown Privateers net with goals as they rolled to a 7-2 victory Wednesday night. On a night where Matt Caranci played in his 104th career Federal Hockey League game, he also proceeded to lead the Whalers offense to victory.
The Whalers got the scoring started on an even strength goal by Jason Pietrasiak, his 4th, at 16:01 of the first. Pietrasiak sent a pass out the point where Brad Norkum fired a shot on goal. Matt Anthony couldn't control the rebound and Pietrasiak tapped it home to give the Whalers the 1-0 lead. The Privateers would answer at 19:26 on the power play as James Gordon fired home his first of the season to tie things up at one. Just eleven seconds later, the Whalers would answer as a bad giveaway by Privateers goaltender Matt Anthony would lead to the Whalers taking a 2-1 advantage. Anthony came way out of his crease to play the puck around the boards. However, his clearing attempt went right to the stick of Cody Ayers who centered it in front for Matt Caranci as he cashed in with his 4th of the season.
At 8:19 of the second period the Privateers would tie things up once again courtesy of James Gordon's 2nd of the game. Britt Ouellete carried the puck in deep behind the Whalers net. He centered a pass for Branden Parkhouse who redirected it off the pads of Mike Brown and Gordon banged home the rebound. The Whalers would retake the lead on the power play at 12:43 thanks to the 2nd goal of the game for Matt Caranci. Igor Karlov sped down the left wing into the Privateers zone. He fed the trailer Caranci who was wide open in the slot and he fired a wicked wrister past Anthony and gave the Whalers the 3-2 lead. The Whalers could have easily had a much bigger lead going into the second intermission if not for the big saves by Matt Anthony. A few times the Whalers found themselves alone in the slot with no defenders around but Anthony came up big to keep it 3-2 after two frames.
In the third it was all Whalers as they would score 4 times to pull away from Watertown. Cody Ayers started things off with his 5th of the season just 51 seconds into the period. Ayers streaked down the left wing and fired a shot past Anthony on the short side. Scott Morongell would be the next to join the score sheet with his 3rd of the season at 4:41. Morongell, the leading scorer amongst all defensemen in the FHL coming into the game, found himself wide open at the top of the right circle and blew a wrist shot in and chasing starting goalie Matt Anthony from the game. However, the goaltending change wouldn't matter as Brad Barber would collect his 1st at 7:41. Barber's shot from the left point seemed to deflect off a Privateers defender and scoot past the new goaltender Brian Kalczyski. Steve Brown would put the icing on the cake with his first at 8:08. Brown corralled the puck in his own zone and then proceeded to skate the length of the ice and tuck a backhander home past the netminder.
The Whalers finished the night 1 for 3 on the powerplay while Watertown was 1 for 4. Mike Brown earned his 7th win of the season stopping 34 of 36 shots. For the Privateers Matt Anthony finished with 36 saves while Brian Kalczyski stopped 7 of 9 in relief. 5 of the 9 goals scored in tonight's game were scored by defensemen.
Danbury is back in action Friday night as the host the Dayton Demonz for the first time this season. It will be the first visit back to Danbury for Dayton since they were swept in last year's Commissioners Cup Final by the Whalers. Puck drop is at 7:35.
Dayton's Losing Streak Broken while Danville's Continues
By: Tommy Pecoraro
Dayton scored 4 unanswered goals and Matthew Kinsella stops everything but the kitchen sink as the Demonz win 4-0, snapping a 3 game losing streak. Danville has been winless since their Nov. 9th win over the Danbury Whalers, and have now lost 4 straight games, and remain at the basement of the FHL Standings.
Despite the 4-0 score, the game was pretty close. Danville had a few quality scoring chances and Nick Niedert played very well, stopping 26 of 30, including multiple turnovers in the slot that Dayton nearly capitalized on. Matthew Kinsella stopped all 25 shots, although he was not challenged on many of them as most of them came from the point or from the corners. Roger Tagoona opened up the scoring at 6:46 of the 1st period, his 3rd of the season. August Aiken would add another one 1:11 later, his 4th of the season. Battaglia (8th) and Darge (6th) would also score later in the game. There was plenty of physicality however, including 2 fights, and multiple bone-crushing hits.
814 people showed up at the David S. Palmer Arena for tonight's game. One of the positives of the Dashers this season is record attendance, averaging about 900 a game now after averaging about 500 last season. The Dashers can look forward to more large crowds as they get set for December, which includes 8 home games.
The Dashers will play twice this weekend, Friday at Watertown and Saturday at Danbury. The Demonz, meanwhile, are vice versa, playing Friday at Danbury and Saturday at Watertown. Danville next plays at home on Friday, December 6th vs Dayton. Meanwhile Dayton will next play at their home rink of Hara Arena on Thursday December 5th against Watertown .
