Four-Goal Second Pushes Whalers Past Aviators
DANBURY, Connecticut -The Brooklyn Aviators dropped a 5-2 decision to the Danbury Whalers on Wednesday night in Federal Hockey League action at the Danbury Ice Arena.
Nick Deschenes led the way offensively for Danbury with two goals and an assist in the victory for the Whalers. The loss also snapped the Aviators three-game winning streak.
Chris Campanale registered his first goal in an Aviator jersey after he buried a loose puck on the power play at the 9:50 mark of the first period. The initial shot came from the point, and the first rebound attempt from forward Matt Atsoff was stopped by Whalers netminder Peter Vetri. Campanale found the puck alone in the crease and slammed it home to give Brooklyn the 1-0 edge.
Danbury erupted with four unanswered goals in the second period with two coming off the stick of Deschenes. Sean O'Malley tied the game for the Whalers 4:23 into the middle frame off a pass from Andrew Willock back door. Danbury tallied two markers in the span of 42-seconds from Deschenes and Willock to take a 3-1 edge, which was then capped off by Deschenes' second of the period with just 32-seconds left in the period.
Campanale's second tally of the game 10:35 into the third cut the Whalers lead in half at 4-2, however just 19-seconds later Greg Holt gave Danbury its three-goal lead back after snapping the puck through the five-hole of A's goaltender Mike DiLorenzo.
Veri stopped 42 shots in the win for Danbury, while DiLorenzo made 21 saves in the losing effort for Brooklyn.
Brooklyn returns home on Friday night when they take on the Whalers at 7:35 p.m. at the Aviator Sports and Events. Catch all the action live via the Aviators broadcast network powered by LiveSportsVideo.com.

DESCHENES RETURN SPARKS WHALERS 5-2 WIN OVER AVIATORS
DANBURY, CT - Nick Deschenes played his first game for the Whalers in over a month but it seemed like he hadn't missed a single shift. The veteran from Alberta scored twice and added an assist as the Danbury Whalers defeated the Brooklyn Aviators 5-2 at the Danbury Ice Arena tonight. The win guaranteed the Whalers will finish no worse than fourth and put them one point away from third place and home ice for the first round.
Brooklyn took the lead as Chris Campanale cashed in an Aviators power play midway through the first period. Danbury struck back in the second, as Sean O'Malley continued his stellar campaign with his 18th goal of the season at 4:25 from linemates Andrew Willock and Matt Moffat. Deschenes put Danbury ahead with assists going to former Trenton Titan teammate Lynn Beedle and James Sanford at 10:56. Willock added his 7th goal in 11 games in Danbury 54 seconds later as Moffat and Sanford earned the helpers. With 32 seconds to go in the second, Deschenes put an exclamation point on the stanza, rifling a wrister just below the crossbar. Sanford and goalie Peter Vetri got the assists. Campanale cut the game to 5-2 midway through the third but Greg Holt got the 3-goal edge back 45 seconds later. Deschenes and James Kirkwood earned the assists on Holt's 14 of the season. Vetri, the FHL's rookie of the year, picked up his 20th win of the season with a 45-save effort. Michael DiLorenzo stopped 23 of 28 shots in the loss.
The teams will finish their regular season slate Friday night in Brooklyn. The Whalers can clinch third place in the standings with an overtime loss or better. Danbury returns to the Ice Arena Saturday night to face the Delaware Federals. Tickets are available for this week and all upcoming Whalers games.
