SHORT NOTICE, SHORT BENCH, NO PROBLEM: WHALERS BEAT BLUEFINS 4-2
LEWISTON, MAINE - December 29, 2011
When the Danbury Whalers woke up this morning, they were certain their day would be a long drive to Danville to face the Dashers the last two days of 2011. However, the FHL schedulers sent them on a detour, as traveling conditions for Akwesasne forced the Whalers to take their spot against Cape Cod in the third installment of the Maine Event. The Whalers rode a three-goal second period and a 43-save effort from Peter Vetri to defeat the Bluefins 4-2 in Federal Hockey League action at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.
Cape Cod took the early lead as JD Gordon set up Jamie Jelenik at 9:24 of the first period. The Whalers had three man-advantages in the first, including a 5-on-3 for 90 seconds, but Wes Vesperini made some nifty saves to keep them off the board. Sean O'Malley tied the game for the Whalers, slipping one near side as the Whalers converged on the crease. Matt Moffat and James Sanford drew the assists on O'Malley's fourth of the season at 3:31 of the second period. The Whalers took the lead on Moffat's 10th of the season, as passes from Kelly Miller and Sanford found him in front and he buried it at 11:05 of the second period. Devin Guy made it 3-1 with a rocket for his seventh of the season from the blueline, unassisted at 11:53. AJ Tesoriero cut the lead from Corey Bellamy to 3-2 at the 16:48 mark of the second. The Bluefins came close a few times with the goalie pulled, but Vetri held the line, taking some body shots along the way. Lynn Beedle got one in the empty net to close the scoring, as his first goal of the season was unassisted to close the scoring at 19:59.
The Whalers will head to Danville to face the Dashers on Friday and Saturday night. The Whalers return to the Ice Arena on January 6th of 2012 to face defending FHL champions Akwesasne. Outlaws Double Up Aviators, 6-3
WAYNE, New Jersey - The Brooklyn Aviators three-game winning streak was snapped on Thursday night after falling to the New Jersey Outlaws, 6-3, at the Capital One Ice Vault in Federal Hockey League action.
Brett Liscomb had a hat trick for New Jersey and goalie Dan McWhinney stopped 42 shots in the Outlaws victory. Casey Mignone scored twice for the Aviators in the defeat.
The Outlaws wasted little time finding the back of the net in the first period, as Jason Reese wristed a shot past A's starting netminder Jo St. Pierre 41-seconds into the opening frame. Brooklyn responded with strong play, however New Jersey took a two-goal edge - 2-0 - after Kevin Cooper roofed the puck over the left shoulder of St. Pierre at the 12:08 mark. The Aviators cut the deficit to 2-1 late in the period on Jordan Bernier's power play marker that came with 5:33 left in the first.
New Jersey did it again to kick off the second frame, but this time it was Liscomb scoring just 38-seconds in. Liscomb's shot from the left wing circle beat St. Pierre to give the Outlaws a 3-1 lead over Brooklyn. Lawne Snyder quickly put the Outlaws back on the board at the 5:24 mark after his blast from the right point gave New Jersey a 4-1 lead.
Mignone tallied twice in the third period for Brooklyn with goals coming 1:47 apart to cut the Outlaws lead to 4-3. In his first game back after sustaining a facial injury on Dec. 10, Mignoe tallied his first on a rebound in front and then later on the breakaway to pull the A's to within one halfway through. Liscomb though regained the two-goal edge for the Outlaws with his second of the night 27-seconds later. He added an empty netter to late to seal the 6-3 win for New Jersey.
St. Pierre is charged with the loss after stopping 29 shots for Brooklyn.
Brooklyn finishes their two-game set with the Outlaws on Friday night with another 7:35 p.m tilt at the Ice Vault. Keep up with all the latest information about Brooklyn on the Aviators Twitter handle, @AviatorsHockey, and make sure to like the Aviators on Facebook at /AviatorsHockey.
