FC Tulsa Placed in Group D for USL Championship Restart

June 25, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release

TULSA - FC Tulsa's small regionalized group was unveiled Thursday and it is full of enticing opponents. Group D will be one of three five-team groups and consists of teams in Texas and Oklahoma. Joining FC Tulsa in Group D will be OKC Energy FC, San Antonio FC, Austin Bold FC and Rio Grande Valley FC Toros.

Since FC Tulsa has not played any of these four clubs yet in 2020, 12 of FC Tulsa's 15 remaining matches will be against these four group opponents, playing each three times. The league shifted to a regionalized groups model, similar to a World Cup format, for the season restart to reduce travel costs and health risk for all its member clubs.

In order to make the 2020 USL Championship Playoffs, FC Tulsa will need to finish in the top two of Group D on points at the end of the regular season. As it stands now, FC Tulsa will begin the 2020 restart in third place in the group with the one point it earned in its lone 2020 match, a draw at Sacramento Republic FC. Austin and San Antonio both earned three points in wins to start the year while Rio Grande Valley and OKC Energy both lost their opener and have zero points.

FC Tulsa's other three matches in 2020 will be played against teams outside of Group D and are still to be announced. A complete 2020 schedule is also in the works and will be announced in the coming weeks leading up to the July 11 start of the season.
