FC Tucson Sign Portuguese Midfielder Joao Delgado

TUCSON, Ariz. - FC Tucson announced today that the club has signed former Reading United AC midfielder João Delgado, pending league and federation approval. Delgado is an international player from Riachos, Portugal.

"João is a player we are delighted to welcome to FC Tucson," said Head Coach John Galas. "He is a gifted player who can play in a variety of positions in the midfield, and I think our fans will grow to love him. He is such a positive, bright and energetic person and a player who fits our culture and playing style."

Delgado played the 2019 season with Reading United AC of USL League Two. The Portuguese midfielder played in a total of eight matches with the club, recording 573 minutes played. In those eight games, Delgado scored one goal and helped lead the club to a USL League Two Mid Atlantic Division best record of 10-1-3. The 26-year-old's USL League Two experience also includes a 2018 season with the Myrtle Beach Mutiny. Delgado made a total of 14 appearances for the Mutiny, scoring five goals and adding four assists.

"I am very happy with this opportunity," said João Delgado. "As an aspiring soccer player from an early age in my life, the most important thing in the game besides the ball are the fans so the moment that I step on that field I will do my best to bring a title to Tucson."

During his time in USL League Two, Delgado played one year of collegiate soccer at Lynn University, in Boca Raton, Florida and two years for Blue Field College in Bluefield, Virginia. The midfielder appeared in a total of 19 games for the Lynn University Fighting Knights, making 17 starts and added two assists in his senior season.

During his two seasons with the BC Rams, Delgado started in 37 games notching 21 goals and five assists, including 9 game-winning goals. The Portuguese native was named a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American, finished third in the Appalachian Athletic Conference in goals and ranked second in the nation in game-winning goals during his junior year of collegiate play. Born in Riachos, Portugal, the central midfielder developed within the União Desportiva de Leiria (U.D. Leiria) academy of the Portuguese Campeonato de Portugal for four years, from 2011 to 2015.
