FC Tucson Eliminated Playoff Contention Following 3-2 Loss to Greenville Triumph SC

TUCSON, Ariz. - Despite late goals from Jordan Jones and Jamael Cox, FC Tucson didn't have enough to overcome Greenville Triumph SC in a 3-2 loss at Kino North Stadium.

With the loss, FC Tucson has officially been eliminated from USL League One Playoff contention.

WHAT TO KNOW

- Forward Jordan Jones scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

- Midfielder Jamael Cox registered his third goal of 2019.

FC Tucson fell into a hole early when Greenville's Cameron Saul found the back of the net just three minutes into the match. Then in the 44th minute, Saul struck again and doubled his team's lead just before halftime.

But FC Tucson counterpunched quickly in the second half. In the 50th minute, Greenville's Omar Mohammed was whistled for a handball inside of the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the home side. Jones stepped up to the spot and buried it to score his eighth goal of the season and cut the deficit to 2-1.

In the 90th minute, Cox, a second-half sub, received a pass from Guillermo Delgado and dribbled past two Greenville defenders to beat Triumph goalkeeper Dallas Jaye for the FC Tucson equalizer.

With FC Tucson needing nothing less than a win to keep its playoff hopes alive, the club pushed forward in the dying moments of the match, earning one last set-piece for a chance to tally the game-winner. Despite bringing goalkeeper Carlos Merancio into the box as an extra man, FC Tucson couldn't put the ball on frame and Greenville took advantage on the counter, scoring a game-winning goal on an empty net.

FC Tucson has two more home matches remaining this season. The next will be this Friday, September 27th, when the club hosts Forward Madison FC. It will be the first time Madison FC visits Kino North Stadium.

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
