FC Kansas City News Release

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KS (July 26, 2014) - FC Kansas City (10-5-4 34pts) will face off with Sky Blue FC (4-7-7 19pts) on Sunday, July 27th. Kick off on Verizon Wireless Field will be at 5:00 PM Central Time. This is the Blues' only home match in the month of July. FC Kansas City returns after a 1-1 draw with the Western New York Flash last Friday. Sky Blue FC had a 4-2 win over the Washington Spirit last Sunday.

FC Kansas City's match against the Western New York Flash was a clear improvement from the match against Portland Thorns FC. The Blues' offense and defense saw an improved performance. Sarah Hagen was the goal scorer for FC Kansas City; this was her third goal in three matches. Samantha Kerr scored for the Flash minutes later to equalize. Though the score was even, FC Kansas City outshot the Flash 20-9. The Blues had 11 of those 20 shots on target. The other end of the pitch, goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart had 6 saves for the night. Both goals were in the first half, making the second half a battle for another goal. Each club had close chances throughout the last 45 minutes, but not one would find the back of the net. The final whistle gave the Blues and the Flash a point each.

Sky Blue FC had an impressive 4-2 win over the Washington Spirit last Sunday. There was a surge of goals late in the last 45 minutes of the match. Sky Blue FC started scoring in the 22nd minute when Kelley O'Hara scored on a play from Nadia Nadim. O'Hara was then credited with an assist on the next goal from Sophie Schmidt in the 36th minute. The score remained at 2-0 until the 81st minute when Nadim tallied a goal to go with her assist. O'Hara completed her brace in the 85th minute making the score 4-0. The Spirit did not give up this late in the game. Just three minutes after Sky Blue's fourth goal, Jodie Taylor scored for the Spirit on a play from Robyn Gayle. A minute later, Gayle scored a goal of her own and the last of the game.

Sunday's match will be highly anticipated for FC Kansas City fans. In the last meeting, the Blues won 5-0 at Yurcak Field. The win was impressive within itself, then Lauren Holiday's goal directly from the corner made SportsCenter's Top Ten Plays at #3. FC Kansas City will try to recreate that performance for a hometown crowd. Sky Blue FC's defense will have to watch the notorious frontline of Kansas City. Names like Erika Tymrak, Amy Rodriguez, Holiday and Hagen lead the attack for the Blues. FC Kansas City remains undefeated at home and hopes to continue that streak as the end of the regular season nears.

Tickets are still available for Sunday's match. Kick off is at 5:00 PM Central Time on Verizon Wireless Field at Durwood Soccer Stadium. Looking ahead, the Blues travel to Washington D.C. for a mid-week match with the Washington Spirit on Wednesday. For tickets to FC Kansas City home matches, call 855.4KC.GOAL
