FC Gold Pride Forward Marta Earns WPS Player of the Week Honors

June 15, 2010 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) - FC Gold Pride News Release

HAYWARD, CA* (June 15, 2010) The Pride's Brazilian superstar Marta is Women's Professional Soccer's Player of the Week for Week 9 after leading first-place FC Gold Pride to a 3-1 victory Sunday over the Philadelphia Independence in a top-of-the-table showdown.

"This is recognition well deserved, Marta had an outstanding performance this week," said FC Gold Pride Head Coach Albertin Montoya. "What I'm most excited and impressed with is how hard she continues to work. She's been very effective for us; she has been scoring goals and making things happen on the field, that's what she's good at."

The four-time reigning FIFA World Player of the Year set up Christine Sinclair for one goal and scored two more as the Pride improved to 6-2-1 and increased its lead in the standings to four points.

Marta, WPS's MVP and scoring champion in the inaugural season, also was selected Player of the Week in Week 6. She's a four-time winner of the honor, capturing it twice last year, when she played for the Los Angeles Sol. She is the first player to capture the honor twice in the 2010 WPS season.

Marta's goals were her league-leading fifth and sixth of the season. She has 16 goals in WPS, the all-time mark.
