CASTRO VALLEY, CA (April 24, 2010) - In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, FC Gold Pride (2-1-0, 6 points) defeated the Atlanta Beat (0-2-1, 1 point), 2-1, in a thrilling Saturday night match at Castro Valley High School Athletic Stadium.
The first half of the match was a physical battle that saw nine combined fouls, two cautions issued (FCGP- Rachel Buehler, 26'; ATL- McCall Zerboni, 46'+), and the Beat's top draft pick Tobin Heath carried off the field in the 20th minute with a right ankle injury.
"Would I rather have a loss and play well or get an ugly win? I'd rather get an ugly win," said Montoya. "Three points goes a long ways and any given team can win."
Despite the obvious obstacles a physical match poses, the teams put on a show for the fans, scoring a goal apiece in the first half. Tiffeny Milbrett, assisted by Camille Abily, opened the game's offensive barrage with her first goal of the season in the tenth minute of play with a well placed shot past her former teammate, Beat goalkeeper Allison Whitworth. The Beat answered back with a goal by Monica Ocampo in the 24th minute of play, assisted by Angie Kerr.
"I have to give credit to Atlanta because they came out and high pressured us all over the field," said Montoya.
Both teams came out with more composure in the second half but no less motivated to earn the win. Despite some quality scoring chances for both teams the game remained at a stalemate until the 89th minute of play when Carrie Dew headed in her first goal of the season on a cross from defender Ali Riley to put her team up 2-1 and seal the victory for the Pride.
"I saw the ball up in the air and I had a clear shot at it," explained Dew, who after several close chances converted her last-minute opportunity. "I just wanted to put it on frame and luckily I did."
FC Gold Pride will make their first cross-country trip to New Jersey where they will face Sky Blue FC on Saturday, May 1 in a game that will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel at 3pm PT. The Pride defeated the defending WPS Champions, 3-1, in their first meeting this season. The Pride, now 2-0 at home, will return to the Bay Area on May 8 to host the Chicago Red Stars.
