FC Edmonton News Release

EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton has signed midfielder Shamit Shome to a contract for the 2021 season, the club announced today.

The 22-year-old most recently played for the Montreal Impact of Major League Soccer (MLS). In 2017, Shome was signed to a Generation Adidas contract prior to the MLS SuperDraft and was drafted by Montreal in the second-round. He made his debut for the club in October of that year in the Impact's final game of the MLS season.

"We are excited to bring in Shamit to join our squad," said FC Edmonton Head Coach Alan Koch. "His winning mentality and ability to create opportunities for his teammates are going to be a major part of our new team. I look forward to working with him to elevate his game to an even higher level. He has had excellent experiences in his career so far and we will help and support him in working toward achieving even greater individual and team success."

Shome began making regular appearances coming off the Impact's bench during the 2018 season, and in April 2019 Shome recorded his first full 90-minute match against DC United. He made a total of 52 appearances in all competitions over the course of approximately 36 months with the club. Shome was released by Montreal and the end of 2020 MLS season, opening up the opportunity for his return to Edmonton.

"I am excited to be coming back home to play for the club and city that gave me so much growing up," said Shome. "I can't wait to work with the group of guys and the coaching staff we have to compete for trophies in both the CPL and Canadian Championship."

The 5'10", 153-pounder was born and raised in Edmonton and is a product of the FC Edmonton's 2015 Youth Academy. That same year, Shome also enrolled at the University of Alberta and went on to have a standout year with the Golden Bears, scoring six goals in 12 appearances. This performance earned him selection as the Canada West Conference Rookie of the Year and being named as a second team all-star for the 2015 season. Shome signed his first professional contract with FC Edmonton in 2016, and he made a total of 28 appearances in all competitions with the Eddies. His play that season generated positive reviews and consideration as one of Canada's most exciting young prospects at the time.

In his career to date, Shome has represented his home country on a national level, playing for the U18, U20, U21, U23, and Senior Canadian Men's National Teams. Shome was nominated for Canada's U20 player of the year in 2016. He made his debut for the senior team in January 2020 ahead of friendlies against Barbados and Iceland, and he made his debut appearance in a match on January 7 against Barbados as a substitute in 4-1 victory. Shome was named to the Canadian U-23 provisional roster for the 2020 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship. Shome has dual citizenship with Bangladesh, and so is also eligible to play for the Bangladesh National Football Team.
