FC Edmonton Signs Two Players to 2020 Roster

August 3, 2020 - Canadian Premier League (CPL) - FC Edmonton News Release

EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton has signed two players to its 2020 roster, the club's front office announced today.

Toronto, ONT native Terique Mohammed has been signed on loan from Toronto FC (TFC), the club at which he has been since 2016.

The 5-9, 148-pound fullback recorded two goals and two assists appearing in 20 games with TFC2 in the 2019 United Soccer League (USL) League One season. The 20-year-old has competed for Canada at the U17 and U20 levels, and has been named to the provisional U23 Olympic roster.

I am very happy to be able to bring in a player of Terique's quality on loan," said FC Edmonton Head Coach and Interim General Manager, Jeff Paulus. "He has the power and pace that is already there for the next level and provides a very big attacking threat from our left side."

The club has also signed central defender, Sam Gardner. The 6-4, 180-pounder was an NCAA Division I standout at Grand Canyon University (GCU) during his senior season in 2018, in which he recorded one goal and two assists appearing in 21 games.

Also from Toronto, and before transferring to GCU, the 23-year-old played his first three collegiate seasons at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL, where he was named to the Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference team for his junior campaign.

Paulus commented, "Sam is a player that comes in with a very high ceiling. He was an accomplished defender at the NCAA D-I level, and even with his impressive size he has good agility and technical ability. We like that Sam looks to play forward and his range of passing is very good."

"Given the present state of things, and our inability to bring in Raul Tito this year, we had an opportunity to add some real quality to our squad and bring our roster to our league limit of 23," Paulus added further. "During a short season, where the health and freshness of the athlete may overshadow the technical and tactical components of the game, we wanted to ensure a balanced roster with multiple options at every position. With the addition of these two players, we now believe we have the flexibility to rotate players throughout which will better help us compete for a championship."
