FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton has signed forward Kyle Porter to a contract for the 2021 season, the club announced today.
Porter played the last two seasons for York9 (now York United) of the Canadian Premier League (CPL), where he made 37 appearances and scored three goals for the club.
"Kyle's versatility and experience in the CPL and other leagues will be invaluable to our group as we prepare for the 2021 season", said FC Edmonton Head Coach Alan Koch. "I have been in contact with him for several years on the journey and am excited to finally get to work with him back in Canada. He is a part of the history of the club and returns to be a part of our future."
As for Porter, he is excited to begin playing for the Eddies, saying "In life, things come full circle. A decade ago, I signed one of my first contracts of value with this club." Porter continued, "I am truly grateful to be returning to this honourable franchise of FC Edmonton and can't wait to get started."
Born and Raised in Mississauga, ON, the 6-0, 170-pound versatile offensive-minded player developed his skills as a youth playing in his home city with the Mississauga Falcons SC. He began the journey toward his professional playing career by joining the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy program in 2007, where he later appeared in friendly games that year with their Residency team during tours of Germany, and at the prestigious Dallas Cup.
Porter also played with that same club in its inaugural season in the United Soccer Premier Development League in 2008. He was then loaned to Energie Cottbus after impressing the German Club during a one- month trial in the summer of that same year, and subsequently played for Cottbus U-19 Junior Bundesliga side. In his time with Cottbus during the 2009-10 season, he made 11 appearances and scored one goal.
Porter represented Canada at the U-17 and U-20 levels, having appeared in all four Group B matches of CONCACAF final round qualifying for the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup, and playing in two games with Team Canada U-20's at the 2009 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. In 2013, he was named to Team Canada's CONCACAF Gold Cup side.
Porter returned to the Vancouver Whitecaps in mid-2010 and played with the 'Caps during their 2011 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. He was offered a contract by the club but the parties could not agree to terms.
In April 2011, Porter signed with FC Edmonton of the NASL, remaining under contract with the club for the 2012 season as well. Then after an extended trial period, Porter signed with MLS's DC United in February 2013 where he became a regular starter for the club. During this season in the United States' capitol city, he appeared in 32 games, scoring three goals and recording one assist.
